Popular Post treeslayer Posted February 6, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted February 6, 2022 So this one was in Sept-Oct 2017 of FWW, i always wanted to build one like it and the opportunity came up to make one for one of my granddaughters, It will be similar, white oak but with some walnut accents as that's what my wife suggested and you all know what that means. first was to mill up 8/4 white oak for the legs, sorry no pictures but they came out at a nice 1 7/8", then on to cutting the mortices for the top of the legs at 2 1/4" deep 1/2" wide with my shop made jig. came out pretty good i think 7 Quote
Mark J Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 Treeslayer, can you shoot a picture of the magazine photo? Quote
Popular Post treeslayer Posted February 7, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 7, 2022 Here you go Mark, mine will be wider and slightly taller and longer but keeping as close as I can to the design including the twine on the ends 6 Quote
Coop Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 I’m rootin for ya bud! Nice start indeed! Quote
treeslayer Posted February 7, 2022 Author Report Posted February 7, 2022 Thanks @Coop especially since you encouraged me to do a journal and inspired me with the one you built 1 Quote
Coop Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 Dave, the backer board behind the leg on your jig, is that permanently attached to the jig or just sacrificial for the legs? Quote
treeslayer Posted February 7, 2022 Author Report Posted February 7, 2022 Just a piece of scrap from the bin @Coop Quote
treeslayer Posted February 7, 2022 Author Report Posted February 7, 2022 I should have put in the Forrest dado stack at 3/8 “ in for this but I got lazy 1 Quote

Chestnut Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 This is a sharp looking table, I was thinking this project looked familiar. Coop this was the table you made out of that wood we convinced you not to burn? 1 Quote

Looking forward to following this Dave. 1 1 Quote
Popular Post treeslayer Posted February 8, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 8, 2022 same set up to cut the tenon cheeks then on to the other mortice holes for the supports, drill hole, chisel out to square then on to the router table to make the mortices for the end supports 5 Quote
gee-dub Posted February 8, 2022 Report Posted February 8, 2022 Looking good and moving right along. I’m getting my popcorn ready. 1 Quote
Popular Post treeslayer Posted February 8, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 8, 2022 this is the way i intend on attaching the floating top, 1 1/4" square 1/2" thick, fits into a 1/4" by 3/8" deep groove, this is a test piece and here's the clips fitted into the top supports i've been using these shop made clips for years and make them from scraps, i make a gallon zip lock bag full so i have them on hand, they aren't inserted fully into the groove to allow for wood movement, i could just by figure 8s but i'm cheap so i go with what works 4 1 Quote
pkinneb Posted February 8, 2022 Report Posted February 8, 2022 Looks great! I am a big fan of Pekovich's designs and you look to be doing a stellar job on this one. Quote
treeslayer Posted February 8, 2022 Author Report Posted February 8, 2022 Thanks @pkinneb, I’m trying to keep as close as I can to his design, and I’m kind of liking the walnut accents, in fact I’ll be building another one in the spring, all QSWO that will be fumed with ammonia that will be larger for our entry into the house 1 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted February 8, 2022 Report Posted February 8, 2022 Dave, have you ever had a clip break with the grain oriented that way? I've always oriented 90* to what you show, but if that works, it should be a lot faster to make a batch. 1 Quote

I just noticed that Ross, I guess I wasn’t paying attention when I made those, they were the last in the bag I had and I’ll switch them out before I’m done, thanks for catching that and yeah they would have a chance to crack in that orientation 2 Quote
Popular Post treeslayer Posted February 9, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 9, 2022 cut the rails out and cut the recess for the twine, first on the TS and the over to the bandsaw to finish them up those hard edges were rounded over slightly, sorry for no pictures of chopping the mortices, the original plan was to use my mortice machine, small wood-tech machine with so-so chisels, needless to say the QSWO just laughed at my machine and had to drill and chop the mortices for the supports and rails but i did get some good quiet shop time while i did it, and here's the first dry fit 8 Quote
Chestnut Posted February 9, 2022 Report Posted February 9, 2022 Dave that curly front rail is beautiful. I like the addition of walnut with the white oak. IMO those two woods go together like lamb and tunafish! 1 Quote
