jmaichel
Voting is now open for the three finalist for the 10 x 10 Challenge! Voting will end November 29th at 11:59 PST. Votes will not be publicly displayed and projects will be anonymous until the voting ends. I think this keeps everything fair. jmaichel
Project #1 Segmented Vase I used three kinds of wood, maple, walnut and cherry. Each piece measured 7-1/2” square x ¾” thick for a total of 1.17 BF of material. I used six tools, plainer, table saw, drill press, scroll saw, spindle sander and a Mouse hand sander. And a special jig in the form of a “bowl press” for gluing. (That may count as a tool also I guess.) (As well as a pencil, straight edge and circle compass.) It took me about three days to build it and two days for finish which was BLO, wipe-on polyurethane and paste wax.
jmaichel
Project #2 Lamp I decided to build a lamp, which was inspired by Chris Becksvoort. The lamp uses less than 2 BF of lumber, and consists ofa solid walnut base and frame, and maple veneer rings (shade). The base pieces are joined with half laps to form the "X" shape. The top was made in a similar fashion, with half laps to form the assembly. The stiles are joined to the base with through tenons, which were glued in and trimmed with a flush cutsaw. The top assembly is connected to the stiles with bridle joints. To form the shade, I cut maple veneer into 2 1/4" strips, and then formed the circles. Each ring was individullay measuredto ensure no "wonky" rings. The 9 rings were glued and left to dry. Then they were individually glued onto the frame. The finish is 5 coats of sprayed shellac, which was rubbed out with 0000 steel wool and some paste wax. Finally, I connected the electrics (cord, switch, etc). Overall this was a fun project to build, though it was frustrating at times. Thanks for organizing this contest, it gaveme the opportunity to grow a bit more in the craft. rodger.
Sprayer for finishing doesn't count as a tool? No, the rules stated that finishing equipment did not count towards the tool count.
G S Haydon
I'm glad I did not submit in the end, I would of been humiliated by the excetional creativity and quality of the work shown above. Round of applause for those that made good on their promise of submitting (and a kick in the nuts for me then).

It also made me think of this old bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFldBVWFgWo

Rapid Roger
I would like to thank everyone concerned with this contest. Thank you James for going to the trouble of sitting the contest up. Thank you other members for suggesting various rules and things for the basis of this contest. Thank you to the ones who voted....(Especially voting for ME. ) Thank you Leigh Nelson and Marc for the prizes. I may have finished third of three but, I got a new bench brush out of it and am very happy with that. I hope this is just a start of more contests to come and that more people get involved with submitting entries. As you can see it doesn't need to be some exiotic wood or fancy joinery work to enter. And it doesn't require a lot of wood or tools or time to whip up an entry. So next time I will not expect to finish as well as I did on this contest but, I will enter anyway. Keep making sawdust!!
