Voting is now open for the three finalist for the 10 x 10 Challenge! Voting will end November 29th at 11:59 PST.

Votes will not be publicly displayed and projects will be anonymous until the voting ends. I think this keeps everything fair.

The next three posts will contain each project individually along with a description.

Good luck to three finalist!

Voting is now closed!

Project #1 Segmented Vase

I used three kinds of wood, maple, walnut and cherry. Each piece measured 7-1/2” square x ¾” thick for a total of 1.17 BF of material.

I used six tools, plainer, table saw, drill press, scroll saw, spindle sander and a Mouse hand sander. And a special jig in the form of a “bowl press” for gluing. (That may count as a tool also I guess.)

(As well as a pencil, straight edge and circle compass.)

It took me about three days to build it and two days for finish which was BLO, wipe-on polyurethane and paste wax.

Project #2 Lamp

I decided to build a lamp, which was inspired by Chris Becksvoort.  The lamp uses less than 2 BF of lumber, and consists of
a solid walnut base and frame, and maple veneer rings (shade).

The base pieces are joined with half laps to form the "X" shape.  The top was made in a similar fashion, with half laps to
form the assembly.  The stiles are joined to the base with through tenons, which were glued in and trimmed with a flush cut
saw.  The top assembly is connected to the stiles with bridle joints.

To form the shade, I cut maple veneer into 2 1/4" strips, and then formed the circles.  Each ring was individullay measured
to ensure no "wonky" rings.  The 9 rings were glued and left to dry. Then they were individually glued onto the frame.

The finish is 5 coats of sprayed shellac, which was rubbed out with 0000 steel wool and some paste wax.

Finally, I connected the electrics (cord, switch, etc).

Overall this was a fun project to build, though it was frustrating at times.  Thanks for organizing this contest, it gave
me the opportunity to grow a bit more in the craft.

Tools Used:

1 Planer
2 Measuring Tape
3 6" combo square
4 Razor Knife
5 Table Saw - Rip
6 Table Saw - Crosscut
7 Sand Paper
8 Flush Trim Saw
9 Hollow Chisel Mortiser
10 Router with 3/4" Straight Bit

Project #3 Small Wooden Box

Here's my submission for the 10x10 challenge.
It is a box I built as a gift for my mother. (Killing a couple of birds with one stone. Tick an X-mas gift off the list and completed the challenge in one fail swoop.)
The box is adapted from one that I had seen in Woodsmith Magazine. I needed to alter the dimensions which meant adding quite a bit of steps to creating the top of the box.

The tools I used are:
1 - Table Saw
2 - Band Saw
3 - Jointer
4 - 1/8" Veritas wooden round over plane
5 - Glue
6 - Bessey K-body Revo Clamp
7 - Small Band Clamp
8 - One large rubber band
9 - 220 grit sanding sponge
10 - Sheet of 220 grit sand paper stuck to a 12x12 piece of MDF

The wood used is well under 10 bf.

I have about
0.10 bf of Walnut
0.025 bf of Padauk
0.03 bf Maple
0.015 bf PurpleHeart
0.015 bf cherry
A tiny sliver of ebony

Approximately 0.185 total board feet

I'm glad I did not submit in the end, I would of been humiliated by the excetional creativity and quality of the work shown above. Round of applause for those that made good on there promise of submitting (and a kick in the nuts for me then).

Graham,

A kick in the nuts might be touch extreme. But it made me giggle. It also made me think of this old bit.

Yeah, me too.  My project would have sucked.  Like a 7th grade ceramic ash tray from art class.

I would like to thank everyone concerned with this contest.

Thank you James for going to the trouble of sitting the contest up.

Thank you other members for suggesting various rules and things for the basis of this contest.

Thank you to the ones who voted....(Especially voting for ME. :) )

Thank you Leigh Nelson and Marc for the prizes.

I may have finished third of three but, I got a new bench brush out of it and am very happy with that. :)

I hope this is just a start of more contests to come and that more people get involved with submitting entries. As you can see it doesn't need to be some exiotic wood or fancy joinery work to enter. And it doesn't require a lot of wood or tools or time  to whip up an entry. So next time I will not expect to finish as well as I did on this contest but, I will enter anyway. :)

Keep making sawdust!! :)
