davestanton
Hey guys. I am going through my great grandfather's carpentry toolbox and have come accross a few things I need a hand identifying. Any ideas on this one?
Immortan D
Maybe it is a tool for making dowels of various diameters?
Coop
Dave, I suspect this tool got misplaced. This appears to be the die for a pasta press.
derekcohen
Looks like a swage for crimping.Regards from PerthDerek
Tpt life
Swage blocks usually have more depth. This looks more like a piano repair man's tool for gauging string.
ponderingturtle
My guess would be for cutting threads. If each was for a given pitch it would be general use. The other ideas don't seem to address why it would adjust like that.
Immortan D
Yeah, it's something you spin with your index finger. A wire stripper maybe? There are some modern designs of wire strippers that have a resemblance with this object.
Tpt life
Spinning almost makes me think spinning cable. Would a woodworker do that? Would this cut inlay stringing like dowel plates act?
wdwerker
I have seen something similar for cutting or cleaning up threads. Would need to inspect the inside of the openings to be sure.
Larry Moore
How about half a flaring tool
jeffreyi
It looks like a thread cutter for wrought ironhere's a linkhttps://books.google.com/books?id=luZ2O9K62nwC&pg=PA120&lpg=PA120&dq=thread+cutter+wrought+iron&source=bl&ots=A6m93aVs5w&sig=B6_c9eWFqyCUNxIr9xrT4YMzntg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CDcQ6AEwBWoVChMI7oXHy46dyAIVBDeICh3L_wve#v=onepage&q=thread cutter wrought iron&f=false
Daniel Kuehl
That looks like a screw thread cutter. I'm thinking that it might have been more cost effective to make your own screws than to purchase them from a smith back then.
Mark J
A wire stripper maybe? There are some modern designs of wire strippers that have a resemblance with this object. That's what I thought at first, but the thing looks old enough that it might pre-date electricity. John Page
Looks like it could almost be a drawplate for making wire. By the looks of the holes, though, I am inclined against that. Maybe they were in a better condition before? It would produce a double half round wire, and the holes might be of slightly decreasing size. From the angle of the photo, however, it is difficult to tell.
SamV
it sure looks like a screw/bolt threading tool to me. Peter Ross uses one very similar making the hardware for Roy Underhill's Gate a few seasons ago. Episode "Field gate Hinges" right around 22 min into the program Peter has this tool in use. hope this helps http://www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop/watch-on-line/watch-season-episodes/2010-2011-episodes/ On 9/27/2015 at 0:42 AM, davestanton said: Hey guys. Mpride1911
Damn, I just saw something like that yesterday at an antique store, or flea market. But I was at about 10 different ones yesterday and can't place it.
