Gixxerjoe04
So, I figured 20 hours of wait between gluing the dominos in and recutting would be fine, well I was wrong. Damn stuff gummed up my bit. Any suggestions on something I could soak the bit in to get the crap off?
Chestnut
Soapy water? Local sharpening guy gave me that for advice. Don't know how reliable that is. Heard simple green works pretty well.
wdwerker
If hot soapy water doesn't work try blade cleaner ( it's usually a strong caustic like oven cleaner)

I seriously doubt any glue was still wet after 20 hours unless you just loaded a bunch of epoxy resin in there without hardener. You might check to see if your bit is dull (as in, was it dull before, not after).
Gixxerjoe04
Well, I think I have some bad glue, last night I poured some tb3 in a little cup to brush it in, then said screw that and just put some in all the holes from the bottle. I left the little cup on the table and when I got home tonight and went to work on it, the little cup of glue was just like how it was last night, had hardened or anything. Damn stuff isn't that old, hopefully the gallon of tb3 I have is still fine.
Gixxerjoe04
Got a lot of work done today on the crib, wife sat at the top of the stairs with a shotgun and made sure I didn't leave until something was glued up, being from ky that story has at least a 50:50 chance of being true. Had to put a butterfly in a knot, had a crack that was too small for epoxy and figured that was the best way, plus like practicing them. Had to put the butterfly off center of the knot because of the curve I was going to cut, didn't want it to get cut up. Cut all the curves, everything mortised, rounded over, and about everything is sanded to 120, some stuff 220. Got one side glued up, didn't have enough clamps that were long enough. Also did tapered legs for the first time today, of course it was backwards from how they're normally tapered, was gonna use my track saw to do it but figured it'd be easier to make a little jig, worked like a charm. Now the scary part of gluing parts together, got one side together fine, will do the other side tomorrow and the longer rails. For the top of the rails, I used the pins on the domino to get the cuts right on the rails and legs. On the lower rails, I marked the rails and then dry fitted the top and marked on the legs. Worked for the first side, hopefully it worked for the rest. Still had a problem of my domino not cutting perfectly flat, said screw it and took a chisel to level it out, not sure what the deal is. Maybe it's just doing that because I made a wife mortise referencing off the pins perhaps?
Ryan Grondin
The domino is still having that issue!! Looking good bud, good progress.
Popular Post Gixxerjoe04
Got the other side glued up and going to glue to the long rails to the slats, but they're going to be held together with an aluminum dowel so I can take it apart and store it. Getting closer to be able to put finish on it, wooooo. Still got to figure out how I want to hold the bed up. Thought about running rails on the bottom, and build a lifted stand for the bed while he's small.

Popular Post Gixxerjoe04
Great camera angle here, glued up the long rails and put the end on to make sure it was still nice and level.
Gixxerjoe04
Found a screw up, on one of the mortises on the rails, I made one too small. Not sure how I messed up that, but I'm hoping I'll be able to use my domino and fix it. Can't do it right now since the sides are glued up, just praying it'll work out. Nice going from 40 pieces of wood to something that looks like a crib in a weekend.
Ryan Grondin
Wow.. great progress. I like it, great job. I'm sure you'll figure out how to fix the little screw up.
pkinneb
Wow I bet that was an interesting glue up! Nicely done.
Gixxerjoe04
First coat of finish on, talk about a pain in the butt getting in between all the slats, wish i could have sprayed or brushed it on and wiped it off, but followed the instructions since I've never used salad bowl finish before. Of course I don't have a spray gun anyways but that seems like a great way to finish. Lighting is pretty crappy, finished it in my basement since my shop has dust covering 96% of it at the moment. One last problem I foresee is not having clamps long enough to pull it together to put the dowels in. I had bought some 60" pipe clamps thinking they'd work, but not taking into the clamp itself, they're 54" at their widest, while the crib will be like 55-57" where i need to clamp
treeslayer
i'm sure you thought of threading both ends of the pipe and using a connector to make them as long as you need joe, i keep some short 1' and 2' sections of threaded pipe around the shop just in case
Eric.
Looks great man. Probably would have been a good candidate for pre-finishing. You can link clamps together to make up for longer distances. Not ideal, but it works. I've done it. Helps if you have an extra pair of hands.
Chestnut
+1 for connectors. you'll use them on something else eventually.

Gixxerjoe04
Thanks for the info, didn't even think about that, figured i was going to have to finagle two clamps to pull against each other, glad i don't have to worry about that now, just about it going together perfect haha. wdwerker
They also make connectors for Bessey parallel clamps . I had to clamp twelve ft 3 inches so I connected an 8' and a 5'. I have also hooked 2 strap clamps together to make a much bigger loop.
Popular Post Gixxerjoe04
Second coat of finish on, I did have to re sand on part of a leg. I put an extra light in the room where I was finishing and noticed a big scratch on it, and since it was going to be showing, didn't want it there. Def need to get better lighting in my shop in a bad way. Anyways, since I have to wait on the finish, I milled up the lumber for the changing table I gotta build. It's going to be out of cherry, only because I don't have enough maple to incorporate it into the build and it not look dumb. Also remembered I needed to work on the dowels and mattress support I'm going to use in the crib. For the mattress, not worrying about making it different heights, was going to but the difference would be like 12 inches, wife said screw it. If for some reason she changes her mind, I'll make it work. For keeping the crib together, the dominos are a tight fit, I'd bet they'd keep it together fine but would be dumb to see if I'd be right. I drilled 1/2" holes in the legs, where it'd be in the middle of the domino. Going to pull the crib together with clamps, drill through the domino and peg it with a 1/2" aluminum dowel. I'm hoping when I let the clamps off, it'll pull a little to keep them in there snug. The dowel isn't a tight fit which of course had me a little worried, but I'll make it work. I cut the rod into pieces tonight on my bandsaw, they were rough as hell. Was using my sander to grind them down and make them look pretty. Would probably have got them done by my kids 5th bday. Remembered I have a collet chuck for my lathe, chucked it up, sanded through the grits and put some polish on it, came out better than I expected.
wtnhighlander
I sympathize with your lighting situation. Mine stinks too. Cool idea about pegging the dominos, it should look really nice.
