Popular Post wnaziri
I wanted to build my daughter a blanket chest. I thought she would really like the Greene & Greene blanket chest from the Guild. I could not be more wrong. Any how, after some questioning, I was informed that she would prefer the chest using purple wood. As luck would have it, I have a crapload of purpleheart that I have not idea how I am going to put it all to good use. Anyhow, we settled on the following design concept. I elected to combine the purpleheart with my all-time favorite figured light wood this month, anigre! I did not like the idea of a full cedar liner so I used solid aromatic cedar for just the bottom of the chest. I really had every intention of using my newly bought Freud frame and panel bits for this project, but I could not do it. Every time I did a sample panel, it seemed so old fashioned. I used pinned mortise tenon construction for this piece. The finish is my usual 2 coats of de-waxed shellac followed by 3 coats of satin Arm-R-Seal, sanding with 400 Mirka mesh between each coat. I used the Torsion hinge by Rockler that holds the top and lets it close nice and lightly.

treeslayer
very nice work inside and out, i agree frame and panel seems to have taken a backseat to other joinery lately but i think it still has a place in the right application. Eric.
Nice job, Wade. You made purpleheart look about as good as purpleheart can look. That anigre is pretty cool stuff...I have access to it but I've never used it. Have you broken the bad news about the color change coming down the road? Well done, it's a nice piece and I'm sure she'll love it.

Wonder how long the purple will last? A gift piece involved some purpleheart. I visit this person about once a year for one thing or another. The piece sets where it gets a fair amount of secondary sunlight and is the color of dark egg plant (think Welch's Grape Juice) after about 4 years.

I had a nice "discussion" with my daughter about purpleheart before I began the project. I am pretty sure that she will not be in love with the color purple as she gets older, which should work out well as the piece changes color. I have seen some aged purpleheart and it had a reddish tint, almost looking like aged padauk.
