Popular Post estesbubba
Well flattening was all about preparation and uneventful while actually doing it just like Brian said it would be. Pretty much took 1/32" off the front slab (which was 1/32" thicker) and just a hair off the back slab. Tops ended up at 3 31/32" thick and my 50" straight edge has no light under it anywhere and winding sticks are dead on in 5 places so I'm happy with the results. Bit left some light scallops and don't know if I want to test my zero LA jack planes skills. Sanding with 80 might be the safer bet. Theses 2x6's smelled like a men's locker room after two-a-days - awful stench but served their purpose. Only place the bit didn't hit but no light under straight edge so not worrying about it. They're flat! And condor tail looks fine. We got over 6" of snow this morning so the view leaving the shop was nice. Merry Christmas everyone!
Brendon_t
The bench looks great, the snow looks terrifying. Hope the insulation is doing its job.
..Kev
Bench looks great Mike! We're hoping for some late night snow here as well. Would be the first white Christmas we've seen in many years.
Coop
Mike, wish the bench was mine and am glad the snow is yours. Great job!
estesbubba
Finished the chop, added the suede, and completed the final leg vise installation today. Man is this thing smooth and extremely powerful. You barely have to tighten it and I can lift myself off the ground without the board moving at all. I also sanded the top to 150 and side and chop to 180 and applied a coat of Danish oil. I'll apply a 2nd coat to the top tomorrow morning and do the base once the deadman and shelves are done. Also have to drill holdfast holes in top and make gap stop. Pleasantly surprised how much the condor tails pop with just a maple end cap. I like the chop hardware with the maple. It's a fully functional bench now! One thing is the chop wants to rotate CCW a little and I can't figure out why. The vise is completely smooth from closed to fully open. The threaded rod isn't near wood at all and the acetal bushing has room top and bottom. Even removing the bushing doesn't change anything. I've moved the crosscriss left and right and same thing. The chop will rotate both sides of noon. Here is what it looks like when closing naturally and it won't affect the functionality but any ideas on why it's at 11:59 instead of noon?
Bart
Can't help with the chop off a minute, but the bench looks amazing!
bgreenb
Mine does that too Mike. It's from the play in the criss cross mechanism. Mine has a bit of play in it too. The direction it's tipping is determined by the center of mass of the chuck. It's no big deal as long as the vise operation is smooth. Looks awesome btw!

It's a lot of work but is worth the journey! Make sure you bookmark Tom's and Brian's build threads as they are invaluable. Funny thing is last night I was just thinking that this bench seems to have taken as much time as finishing the inside of my building. Probably not but is a detailed project. What wood are you going to use?
Janello
Most likely hard maple. I'm also considering doing the secondary wood with cherry.
estesbubba
I have no regrets going with hard maple over soft. Get everything sharp before you start and you'll be fine. Did you get the M hardware? If so that will look great with cherry. I got the last of the Dymondwood (cocobolo) which doesn't match cherry or walnut very well. Janello
Yeah, I got the M hardware. It says they are black cherry. I have a nice hunk of 8/4 cherry for the end cap. Hope it matches up. Are the knobs easily removable? I can always turn some matching if so.
estesbubba
The plant that made my knobs burned down and they are using cherry now so it should match your end cap well. You have to install the knobs and they are removable. I think the end cap is 12/4 but you can glue up two 8/4 pieces for it.
Popular Post estesbubba
My bench is finally done* and I couldn't be happier how it turned out! I ended up putting 2 coats of Watco Danish oil on the entire bench. Of course there were a few mistakes along the journey but I was lucky that none of them were major. Using the vices later in the build I could see what all the hype is about. This was my most challenging project ever and probably the most rewarding. It really was a fun build other than the deep hand-held routing. My shop is a disaster and I have never looked so forward to cleaning. Thanks to Tom and Brian for their threads and answering all my questions. Without their help I know I would have made more (and probably bigger) mistakes. * Bench is done except for round dog holes in top. I have yet to buy a bit I'm confident will produce accurate holes. Marc's Rockler link is dead so if anyone has a suggestion I would appreciate it. I knew that random spacing with the ship lap shelves would drive me nuts so I calculated mine with 1/8" gap and used cabinet door spacers to keep even spacing.

Eric.
Beautiful job Mike. Now go beat the hell out of it. I don't know what it is...every time I see a new Roubo I get the hankerin' to look for buried treasure. Aaaaargh matey! A kid dresses up as a pirate for Halloween and goes trick-or-treating by himself. He knocks on a door and a man answers. The man says, "Oh, a pirate! But where are your buccaneers?" The kid says, "On my buccan head, duh."

bgreenb
Fantastic job Mike! Bench turned out great, and I actually love the look of all hard maple. That's one solid, sturdy, beautiful bench. Nice work man. Now what's the first project gonna be?
