shaneymack
I'm impressed that you're maintaining such high quality at that pace Shane! I really like how you are verifying each step, making sure everything is as it should be before moving on. Doing it right by making the needed jigs, carefully marking out all the waste areas, doing lots of dry-fits.Now go tuck those kids into bed - your fans need their project journal pics and updates!haha you are hilarious! Thanks for the compliment. I got alot done today so I will update in the morning!
Popular Post shaneymack
First thing i did yesterday was cut the horns. Then i final milled my arm blanks and marked the location of the arms I had to screw the legs to the seat so i marked out the centers and pre-drilled some holes. I dont have the fancy miller 1x bit so i had to use three different bits. I used a 3/8" forstner on the drill press to make the hole for the plug. Then a twist bit for the screw to pass through. With that done on the drill press i was ready to reassemble and put the screws. Big bro and lil bro tag teaming this job These are the screws im using. They are GRK 3-1/8" screws. If you never used these do yourself a favour and try them, they are amazing. You can screw into hardwood without even predrilling or countersinking. Screws installed Now with the chair assembled it was time to start fitting the arm blank. First i had to cut a 6° angle on the front bottom part of the blank. Clean up with the laj Nice tight fit Then i had to cut a bevel on the back of the blank for it to match up with the back leg Perfect fit My lee valley order finally arrived In the box i had the chuck to put on the lathe to be able to drill holes in the ends of the front legs. But because my lathe is so short i could not use my tailstock, the leg was too long. So i set the tool rest so that the back center point of the leg was to same height from the bed as the front. I held a square on the bed at the back end as i was manually pushing it to be sure i was in line along the horizontal axis. It worked great Next i had to drill a matching holes in the underside of the arm blank It will be a dowell that will join the2. Now over to the drill press with the 6° jig to put the angled part that i was drilling horizontal. Result Now over to the bandsaw to cut out the top profile of the arms. Marked out the side profile Cut it Looks great!! Now it was time to take the chair apart and scoop out the seat since I just received my carving disk. Here is a pic of me ready to rock and very excited With this wheel i found that the best way to establish my lines was holding the grinder vertically Nice result My battery died after about 5 minutes. What a bummer. I switched to the rotex with a 40 grit to see how it would work Didnt work great. So that was a quick end to my night because all three of my batteries were dead and it takes about an hour to charge them. I was pretty annoyed. This is what i got accomplished on the seat. Keep in mind its still pretty rough So yesterday was a total of 6 hours which includes messing with almost dead batteries for a while and vacuuming the shop after the dust storm that was the result of carving. Brings my total to 24 hours.Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk

Dude not only is the project coming along great, but this journal is great too. Really appreciate all the detail and the hours log. Nice work. Thanks Brian, I thought the total time would be good info to have for anyone else looking to build this chair in the future. Looking great Shane. You do nice clean work that I approve of. You're an animal. Do it.Thanks Man! Im trying! Again, great progress Shane! That carving disk looks like it won't forgive any mistake...The disk is super easy to use, you just have to be VERY careful when you approach the lines. Thats why i did the lines with the grinder vertically. It really helped establish the lines without going over them. A little dangerous though..... shaneymack
How deep does it cut for each pass? Really depends how hard you push and the angle you are holding it at. I did a practice line on another piece to get a quick feel for it. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
Janello
I think you've built 10 or 12 of these before. Tell us the truth, did you teach Sam? Seriously. Your work flow seems extremely well thought out and the results show the pride you are taking with this build.

Chet
Again Shane this has been a joy to watch. Quick off topic question. I noticed you have the Driftmaster fence on your larger bandsaw. are you happy with it? I know you received it free of charge so that may sway your view. The other thing, have you ever tried using the fence from your 1412 on the Driftmaster? I curious because it is a higher fence that would give more support for resawing wider pieces.

Hey Chet, I am very happy with my driftmaster fence. I dont care for the drift adjustment so much its more the microadjustment of the fence that is great. I also like the little table extension on the infeed side of the table. I have not tried using the 1412 fence. The driftmaster stock fence allows me to resaw 6-8" without any issues. I made a 12" high resaw fence for higher stuff. If you want any more specific info dont be shy, id be glad to help. Just got the shape of the seat done.

bgreenb
Shane that video cracked me up - I don't know why, but I expected you to have an accent. But you sound just like me, other than "aboot" and "sahnder" (I'm such an American jerk...)In all seriousness though, I was shocked that it was only a 20 minute carving job. I would've thought it would take longer. Nice job man, it looks great.Edit: I just pulled the trigger on that interface pad. Thanks for spending my money. ..Kev
Awesome work as usual Shane! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the horns! You'll be glad that you didn't have that Miller bit for drilling your screw holes! They oversize the hole so you have to futz with epoxy to plug the holes.

I did my plug holes with a 3/8" forstner so my plugs should fit snug as a bug in a rug. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
