Popular Post freedhardwoods
My son and I dug a hole a week ago. 18' x 48' addition. WHERE DID ALL THIS DIRT COME FROM? I think it was multiplying every time I went after another scoop. . I knew I had a solid driveway by the building, but we scraped up over 30 tons of rock I guess I don't have a very good concept of volume. I had a couple days off last week. I got the forms up and poured concrete Saturday. I ordered a "little" (too much) extra to make sure I had enough. I'm doing this in my "spare" time. I was so exhausted from the long hours and hard manual labor all week(If you've ever done concrete work, you know what I mean) I took Saturday afternoon off. I never do that. I felt a little guilty. To Be Continued.............
shaneymack
You are my kind of guy ! You clearly don't do things half way. Your shop will be 18x48 !!!!!!! oh.......my........goodness! Hope you will post pics as you go and especially as you fill it with tools. Any ideas of what tools you will be buying? freedhardwoods
I already have most of the tools I will be starting with. I have a Dewalt DWE7491RS table saw and DWS780 chop saw I bought for cabinet installing. I will be using Marc Sommerfeld's cabinet making method, so I have several of his tools. Built a crude looking but accurate router table. I already have 4 routers. Parallel clamps are expensive, so I made (almost done) 15 of my own, and bought 8 IRWIN QUICK-GRIP XP600, 24" clamps. Kreg K4 jig. Porter Cable 4216 dovetail jig Already have 2 saw dust blowers; made my own cyclone. Several other things I can't remember. I'm going to order a Fuji Mini Mite 4 for finishing. I'm starting this business on a shoestring in a shoe box by most shop standards in the area, but (my) money doesn't grow on trees.

freedhardwoods
I don't pay much attention to it any more. Last year, about 7 pm, my wife asked if I knew what day it was. It took me a minute, but I did remember it was my birthday.
Popular Post freedhardwoods
A little more progress. I pulled the form boards and stakes, then carried some dirt back in where we dug a little deep. I built a "bridge" so I wouldn't be driving on the new concrete. Two piles of dirt, two 2x6's on the dirt, and two 2x8's to drive on. I don't care what anyone says, concrete is a 4 letter word.

Brendon_t
Awesome start. What is the building next to it?

My plan was to build a 40'x48x14' building beside it as my business grew. I changed it to a mechanic shop to work on my vehicles and equipment after I closed that business. I cleaned up and rearranged things trying to make room to work, but I've collected too many tools and parts over the years. I could only clear about 16' on one end and that is just too crowded, so here comes the new addition.
Popular Post freedhardwoods
Made a little more progress today. I put up a short block wall on the uphill end, put in a tile around the footer to keep water out, put a double plate on the new footer and screwed 2x6's to the side of the old footer. The triangle of concrete is for a bigger door to drive in on the end. Doesn't look like much for 12 hours of work.
Coop
Bull corn! Looks like a whole bunch got done. Coming along great! Will you be pouring concrete inside the footers or resting floor joists on them?
Tpt life
Construction is always by fits and starts. Things appear to be going well to all of us who have done it.

Will you be pouring concrete inside the footers or resting floor joists on them? For years I have heard people complain about foot and back pain from working on a concrete floor all day. I decided from the start I am putting in a wood floor. I will screw non - t & g plywood to the joists and run dust piping and electrical under the floor. If I want to rearrange things at some point, just pull up a few sheets and move things. 7 minutes ago, C Shaffer said: Construction is always by fits and starts. Popular Post freedhardwoods
Another 12 hours work. 2x10's every foot for the first 16' where lumber & plywood will be stored and the table saw(s) & router table will be in the center of the room. Every 16" in the rest of the building.
..Kev
That otta be a stout floor!
mat60
Even at 16in OC should be great. I had a wood floor in my last shop that was great compared to the cement floor I have now. Will you be using some Insulation in the floor ?
Popular Post freedhardwoods
I am going to have a heated crawl space even though I know it will take a little more to heat, One of the cabinet shops that I help install for called to say I could use one of their workers to help today. I was out and working on the joists at 3 am this morning. I found out I was getting help at 10 am and went and picked him up. While we were putting the floor down, I managed to fall through the joists once. I was ready to call it a day by the time I got in the house at 5 pm. I was working on the shop from 4 am - 4 pm on Monday, left home at 4 am Tuesday for an install and got back at 8 pm, then 14 hours today. That pace is wearing on me. I guess I'm not as young as I used to be. In the pics, I screwed a double plate to the side of the old footer to get the joists away from the uneven concrete. We got 24 sheets of osb down. I can't put down the last 2' until I pull the sliding doors off. I put down lumber wrap papers to keep the crawl space dry for now.
..Kev
Yea, hard to keep up that pace for sure! Reminds me of when I built my shop! At least you know it's being built correct.
