Anna S
that looks amazing! I tried sketch up once, and ended shortly thereafter buying drafting tools on amazon. How did you get the planes and other tools in your sketch up design?

A slight gap on the width would be ideal. A 1/32 each side should be plenty. There's 1/4" gap all around, so I guess I'm safe! Sorry for the ugly pic, just a dry fit. The other side has the same gap. 1 hour ago, Anna S said: that looks amazing! I tried sketch up once, and ended shortly thereafter buying drafting tools on amazon. I got them from the sketchup warehouse, it's a user maintained library of 3D items available right from inside Sketchup. 42 minutes ago, Lester Burnham said: This is looking good, D. wdwerker
If the panel is in a groove one or 2 brads at the top and bottom will keep the panel from shifting.
Popular Post Immortan D
All important parts sanded to 220 and ready for final assembly after countersinking the dowel holes. I even already mortised the side doors and panels to receive the hinges. I will prefinish everything before assembly, with the poly + BLO + mineral spirits mix.

Immortan D
Waiting for prefinish to dry. Dowels joinery fully exposed on the back of the back frame LOL:
Immortan D
Glue-up. I had to also clamp a properly dimensioned scrap piece to make sure everything was nice and square.
Immortan D
Been working on the block plane holder. Started by jointing a few narrow stripes of wood. Then using the planes and a piece of aluminium as separators, I laid out the separators and screwed them in place. And kept going until they were all fitted. I noticed than some of the planes were not sitting properly at the expected angle. I fixed that by chopping mortises to make room for their knobs. I used chisels and a shop made sanding block. I also replaced the side pieces because the screw holes on the previous ones did not have the same layout of the separators. Applied two coats of shellac and installed in the chest.
wdwerker
Every time I build something custom fit I have to go back and modify my original attempt to accommodate a knob, handle , nut etc. When a spot is custom fitted a label helps the right tool end up back in its home. Lookin good !

The fitting of my #3 and #4 went like this: a molded piece for the heels and a couple of triangles that act as separators, since there wasn't enough space for a molded piece of some strength.
Popular Post Immortan D
Made the chisel holder. Started by marking the center of each chisel on a board. Then drilled the holes and counter bored them on the drill press. After that I mortised the sides for the wider chisels to fit. Glued cork to the floor of the chest to avoid damage to the long chisels. On another board, I carved a dado with chisels at first and then a router plane when I was about done. Preparing for a test fit before Glue-up lol This piece supports the other end of the holder, which is attached to it by a single screw accessible from the top. And here it is. There's empty space, I may drill holes for screwdrivers or rasps there. I see there's not much interest in my build, so I will keep the updates to a minimum from now on.

Popular Post davewyo
Yeah, Ive been hanging on every post you make. Sometimes people don't say anything because you're knocking it out of the park. If the crowd is quiet while you're putting on a clinic that's a good thing. Popular Post Immortan D
Thanks guys! This is where I'm at so far: I assembled everything together. Still have to polish a million details, work on the finish and make the front door and top cover. The front door will be of the removable type, because even on my tiny workbench I enjoyed working with the chest right in front of my vise, and a hinged door would make that impossible.

Shouldn't 't lift it now because it could break apart without all the screws that keep everything together and I need the handles before setting those. That said I lifted it for a fraction of a second and felt like my Bosch glide, close to 70 pounds with the tools. So it won't be a problem for me, I'm always moving that saw to and from the floor sometimes many times a day lol
Popular Post Immortan D
Got some strong enough brass door handles and proceeded with the installation. Out of MDF I made a template, drilling the holes on my drill press, and tested the fit. Then clamped the template to the chest and drilled the holes. First things first, before installing the handles, I screwed the fundamental screws that will keep the chest from exploding. Then installed the handles. Finally I lifted it. It's not that heavy, seriously, and I couldn't hear any sound coming from it, which is good. Selfie with tool chest.

Immortan D
3 minutes ago, pkinneb said: Very nice!! How will the front and top attach? Thanks! The front will be removable. I will use brass latches on top and probably a wooden "C" profile at the bottom or brass hardware. The top I haven't made my mind yet.
treeslayer
nice progress D, looks great. hardware installation is my least favorite part of woodworking even though in means the end is near, i think of it as one last chance to screw things up
