Yeah, been there done that, that's why I make those templates, which may seem like a waste of time but they take all the stress out of the maneuver lol.

Immortan D
Fixing issues now. Toothpicks to the rescue. Have to drill those hinge holes again. And there's another issue in this very same frame. As one can tell from the pic, when I mortised for the hinges I did it on the wrong side of the frame, so I had no choice but to extend those mortises to the other side. Not sure how to fix this. I don't, but it's been bothering me lol. Will try shaving a small piece of wood, see if it makes it less noticeable.
wdwerker
Glue in a piece that is slightly to thick and wide, but exact length. Then screw the hinge in place with the back edge slightly lubed. Then glue the patch in place and you can shave it flush when dry.
davewyo
If cosmetics really matter put a patch in and then then put some edge veneer on to cover it up. Got that one from Terry Mc.
Popular Post Immortan D
Precision hand drill Just turned the Dewalt angle adapter with a palm ratchet to drill the replacement holes. Worked like a charm. I guess that's neo-cromagnon woodworking?

Immortan D
Fitting of the LN beading tool. I want the top bin to be a project area instead of a permanent setting for tools. So no tool fitting will take place there, except for a small slider tray for pencils and marking knives. So I started looking for spots for the small planes and eventually I ended up moving all of them out of the bin. The spot for the beading tool was half way into the "tunnel" so I had two choices: taking the whole chest apart and then reassemble, or just deal with the spot and so I did. I nailed a small jig together to mark the position of the holes, referencing the floor and the edge of the tunnel. Using the jig I marked the holes and drilled with the "precision drill" lol Now that tool is quickly becoming a lifesaver in this project. I installed brass hooks and turned out well, easy to store and retrieve the beading tool without interference from other tools.
wdwerker
Beading not bedding, I had to go look at Lie Nielsons site to figure it out. My brain just couldn't make the leap today.

Popular Post Immortan D
I made the front door removable using brass hardware. It slides up for removal. Top of the door. At the bottom of the chest I mortised holes to receive the hooks on the door. The brass plate in front of the mortise should prevent splitting. I may install glass in that door, not sure what to do.
wdwerker
I glue glass into doors using Lexcel clear caulk. It dries extremely clear, slightly flexible and keeps the glass from rattling. I lay the glass in a rabbet and wipe the caulk with a finger dipped in mineral spirits . It might take a couple days to dry but I've been doing it this way for over 25 years and it's held up to the test of time.

That elastomeric product seems like a better solution than the silicone I've been using. Thanks Steve!
wdwerker
Glad to share successful methods. I never put caulk under the glass. Wiping the bead to smooth it pushes it around the edges. You can cut this if the glass ever gets broken. Caulk under the glass makes it a nightmare to remove the broken pieces.

Coop
Where are you getting this brass hardware, as in the hooks and the items in the last two pics?
wdwerker
At that size I would just use 1/8" double strength glass. Tempered has to be ordered to an exact size and can take days to weeks to get. Once the glass is glued into the frame it will take a really strong blow to even crack it.
