RichardA
Kinda makes you wonder...Whoulda thunk it up.
drzaius
That's very clever. He was pretty sloppy with the demonstration & didn't end up with a very good fit, but with more care, it could be very accurate.
Chet
I can see were the thinner the material used to do the initial layout would help in the fact that then the tip of the stick would be closer to your final material and not rocking around. Mark J
Very clever, I'll try to remeber this one. To Chet's point, if the final tip of the tick stick were a little thicker, approximating the card board it would be easier to register the tip with the target shape and the template. Chestnut
Making the tip thicker and driving a nail out it would give a nice tip. Then when it comes to marking on the template you could just tap it to make an indent. Kinda like how a compass point is, or divider point.
Chet
We get a chance to think it through but these things were probably originally made on site with a handsaw and pocket knife and in a matter of minutes while standing up on scaffolding.

I saw this used once, and once only, on site back in the 1970s in the attic of an old manor house. All the rafters and joists had moved over the centuries since it was built, so there were no real reference surfaces or edges. The chippy who used it cut the whole thing with his axe from a piece of scrap, very quickly. After it had served its purpose it was discarded, but I remember being impressed with how well it worked. I thought at the time that "I must remember that" but I have never had occasion to use the technique myself. It is filed away at the back of my brain under "could be useful some day".
wtnhighlander
The See Jane Drill channel has a ton of useful stuff like that.

You’re to be commended for even remembering the 70’s!

Coop
Those 70’s are vague and these 70’s will be a challenge.

Who's "they", have you met them, I've heard so much about they, can you introduce me to them, then you'll have to explain to me who "them" is, I think I'm getting confused. Aw, just forget the whole thing, unless "they" want to meet me.

In all these years Ive never met that cuss, wish they’d quit asking.
