rainjer Posted October 17, 2020 Report Share Posted October 17, 2020 I know the Dewalt DW735X seems to be most peoples preference when it comes to portable planers but I am not sure if I want to pend $600+ on one. I would like do spend about 1/2 to 2/3 that much. The other issue is storage. The DW735X is big and heavy. I need one I can store away when not in use. Most other planers seem to be about 2/3 the size and weight. I have been doing woodworking most of my life and I have never owed a planer. I have been able to build everything I want from the lumber I buy without l planning in the past but I do know I have been paying a premium for the wood. I want to start making some Art & Craft style chair for my wife so I am going to need to start milling my own wood to get the dimension I need. I figure I may run 50-100 B/F of wood over the the next 12-18 months with it. What is the next best planer for the $300-$400 range? Which has the best chip extraction without a dust collector? (will be used outside) I am thinking I want a 3 blade one. Looking at: Ridgid for $450. I don't think it really causes issues but would make a mess. If price is an issue shop used. Use it for the project your working on and then sell it again. Most of the DW735 & DW735X are $500+ and I cannot justify that price on a used machine. My thought on buy a less expensive one was to see how much I use it. There is no way people are buying a 735 for $500 you could wait for a sale and get one new without the tables and blades for $500. CPO has the 735X on ebay for $531. The 735, although a good unit, does not have the chip extraction of the 745. Geoffrey Posted October 18, 2020 Report Share Posted October 18, 2020 People are selling a used DW735 for $400? I'd sell mine for $200, since I am not using it any more and I have to walk around it. I still think the DW735 is a great planer. Great quality on the cuts, easy to replace knives, and powerful chip blowing. (I used a Rockler separator after the planer, and I had to clamp the lid to the bucket of the separator or the 735 would blow the lid off.) The problem for me was that my jointer was only a 6" model, and I wanted something wider. While I started shopping for a wider jointer, I ended up with a big combo machine, so now I use that for all my jointing and planing work. There is a Dewalt DW734 that was listed 2 days ago for $500, new is $450..... Todays search result: FB Market place - 0 listing within 100 milles. Craig's list - 1 DW734 for $325 (on an island) & a very used DW735 for $510. (inquired and the price is firm) OfferUp - 3 DW734 for $350-$500 , 1 Bauer for $350 and 1 Craftsman for $520. wtnhighlander Posted October 18, 2020 Report Share Posted October 18, 2020 If cost is the primary concern, I would suggest buying a new Bauer from HF, along with replacement insurance. It is only 2 blades, but otherwise functionally comparable to the DW734 and other lunchbox types for about $100 less. Aside from that, shoot for the DW735, it is the best you will find that is still (sort of) portable, and less than $1500. That's one way, you could use a pillow, a 55 gal drum on castors, you could even get a Harbor Freight DC for a couple hundred , it comes with castors, and you can move it from machine to machine as needed. There are dozens of ways to deal with it. You saw my pickup truck when I didn't have space for any of those options. But the roads I drove were well mulched.
