Popular Post Tom King
I was originally planning to add onto a building here for a mechanic shop, but have managed to get the existing building cleared out enough to function as the mechanic shop, thanks to a shipping container, and a working front end loader. Anyway, story shortened some, I've decided to make the addition a woodworking shop. Looks like it will be 24x40. Lumber prices are discouraging, but I've found a sawyer not too far away that will saw full sized 2x12x24's, out of the best quality YP logs, for $84 a piece. I'm going to go ahead, and get the rafters, as soon as the ground dries out enough for us to park my trailer at the end of his mill, and take them right as they're sawn. I have hundreds of stickers left from sawing the sapwood off Cypress boards, to make shingles, so will sticker them under another shed for use when I get that far. I really want a slider like the one Mick got not too long ago, and think I should have room for one. I never did anything with the 6 ton gas pack I bought for the mechanic shop, so I can use that for heat, and air. Since I quit building new houses in 2007, my wood shop has been whatever the last old house I worked on was, and all are a few miles from home, and none have enough room. This one will be a hundred yards from the house.
Tpt life
In the north, I’d like one connected to the house. I have to fight to remember where you are.
Tom King
Not room to add anything else onto the house. It's been added onto enough times that there is nowhere for another roof to slope down from. It won't be a hobby shop anyway.

Tom is near the NC - VA border, as I recall. Like me, he's in a part of the world where a midnight trip to the bathroom required shoes and a lantern, not all that long ago. And winter / summer didn't make much difference.

My dad was born in a home with no water. That’s western NY foothills. Similar situation but for the seasons. I am not sure how to take the hobby comment. Sounds like a slur. Still interested to see what you build Tom.
Coop
Tom, do you currently have a dedicated woodworking shop?
Mick S
I'm looking forward to seeing what you work up for the new shop! Loving that slider.

It was built 20 plus years ago. I expected a benefit being close but I got more than I bargained for. Mine is 24 x 24. Plus an overhang 12 more feet. And another 12' awning as my shop faces west making it too hot in the florida afternoons without the awning. Tom with your skills I am sure this will be an exceptional shop. And enough room for the slider.

There is one that started out as a woodworking shop, a hundred feet from the house. 16x36, but it was not used much, and mostly taken over for storage. Since I quit building new houses in 2007, I always set up shop in one of the old houses I worked on, and the only one now is the 1828 house-takes up four rooms, and a 40 foot long hallway, but it's 7 miles from home. The owner's plans changed, and likes for me to keep my eyes on the place, so told me to keep using it like I want to. When I was building new houses, I always built an oversized garage first, and set up a full cabinet shop in there. This won't be a linear process, because the to-do list is still very long, and money making jobs will come first. Being close to home, I should be able to work on it in the evenings when the weather is nice.
Mark J
I was wondering about those 2 x 12 pine boards. They're going to need some time to air dry, but it doesn't sound like you're in a hurry.
Immortan D
100 yards from your home? I'd plan for a toilet in your new shop, especially if you have a coworker or two.
Tom King
150 acres of woods nearby. No neighbors in sight. They'll be dry enough by the time for them to go up-not possible to get in a hurry.
