Popular Post ..Kev
Well, I can’t believe that I’m posting a journal while on the road for work! Big thanks @Chet K. for the use of his wonderful shop and his talented two hands on this project as well as the others we’ve worked on together. I got a commission from someone in the refinery that I’m working in to build a desk for their daughter. The required size is a little different as it needed to fit a particular space as well as a particular person. The overall dimensions are 40”W x 20”D x 29” tall. They didn’t want a drawer or anything real fancy as it’s for a 9yo girl. I started in Sketchup and produced a design they liked. The only deviation from the drawing was a request to put a slight taper on the front legs. The material of choice was Cherry. Legs will be the 8/4 and everything else will be 4/4. Used chalk to identify where I wanted to pull the parts from Roughed out all the parts Used the domino for alignment on the top and got that glued up Also used the domino for all the apron to leg joinery. Got the fry fit done and everything went as expected. Chet and I built a taper jig for the front legs and got them done. Sorry, I didn’t grab a picture of that. Here’s where the desk currently sits. Base is sanded and glued up. The top is also ready to install. We needed to pick up some figure 8s to mount the top as well as the finish which we’ll do next weekend. Finish will be GF WB Satin via HVLP.

And the little girl that is receiving this will get a life time of use.

I built a similar desk with m&t joinery in the Spring and it took significantly longer. Is the Domino really such a great tool that you can knock out a project like this in a weekend? I've always ruled it out based on the cost. I use a biscuit joiner for large panels and I get good results. But I can never get it accurate enough for something like joining the aprons to the legs. I would love to be able to knock something like this out in a weekend. -E

If you do enough projects requiring M&T joinery and you value your time, then it really is worth the money. If you do 1 project a year with M&T joinery then, maybe it's not worth the money. My total time to build that desk was around 15 hours and that included dry time between coats of finish.
Popular Post ..Kev
Got a very cool "thank you" card today from the little girl who got the desk. They've also promised me a picture of the desk in it's final home and I'll post when I get that. Way better than money any day!

A couple years ago I made 2 briskets for a guy at work and his kids hand wrote me thank you letters which made my day and stayed on our fridge for quite a while.
