wtnhighlander
I could, if I owned a pocket screw jig! It is still only dry-fitted, so I can take it apart and to M&T on the parts, I just thought it might be stronger (and a lot simpler) to do a lap joint. You're thinking it would look best to do the vertical as two pieces, and butt against the horizontals, rather than run through them?
shaneymack
Looking good Ross. I would just M&T 2 seperate verticals into the horzontal.

Good time to add the small pocket hole jig to your arsenal..

wtnhighlander
So, this morning I cut 3 of the four mortices needed for the center vertical pieces. This pine is so soft, I didn't have to chop, just sort of pared them out.

Glad you went M&T too but, if you get stuck and need a pocket hole or need one where the jig-style counterbore won't fit: 3/4" diameter hole, 3/8" deep, drive screw at about 15* where the flat bottom of the 3/4" hole meets the side wall. This was an afterthought . . . er . . . I mean design enhancement . . . that I wanted on a piece and the location wouldn't let me use M&T or a spline so it just got glued and screwed on as an attachment.

wtnhighlander
Just to prove I am still hacking away at this: Rabbet / rebate around the back, to receive the ship-lap boards I am working on next.
Popular Post wtnhighlander
Got some work on the back panel ship-lap today. My bandsaw is too small, so I used the tablesaw to rip most of the way through from each edge. I finished up with a handsaw. With such a thin strip of soft pine, I was cutting about 4" per stroke. Done in no time! Now to make 'em smooth and even ... Just kidding! I used my big yellow lunchbox for that! I used a rabbeting bit with a makeshift fence to cut the laps. And here are several boards laid in place. I have to cut narrow ones for the outside edges, and short ones for the upper section, but its taking shape. I wrapped up my shop session by cleaning up with the leaf blower method. Waaaayyy overdue for that!

wtnhighlander
Back panels dry-fitted & held in with 3M blue "clamps". It is ever so tempting to just glue these in, but I guess I'll use screws.

It's looking good Ross. You have to come up with a sales pitch on the milk paint so she thinks it was her idea.
