Popular Post shaneymack
Realised today I have untill friday to make my wife the box that I wanted to make to put her gift in. I bought her a weekend away alone at a fancy spa about 1.5hrs from here. The box will hold the print out of the reservation. I got home and went into the shop with an idea of what I wanted to do but no drawing. So I took a scrap of poplar and drew out what was in my head. This box will be made of ebony and zebrawood. When i slapped that hunk of ebony down on the chop saw to cut it I paused. I couldn't believe i was about to cut off a 6" piece of wood that was worth over 50$! That hurt The byrd head on the jointer and planer did a wonderful job with the zebrawood. I was impressed withthe finish. I was surprised that the jointer had a much easier time milling the ebony than the zebrawood Here are the pieces milled up. Beautiful wood! Next i resawed the zebrawood and a half inch piece off the 8/4 ebony I resawed the zebrawood because I want the lid to have perfect grain continuity, A four corner match. I cut my pieces with the crosscut saw I got them perfectly square and exactly the same lengths at the shooting board Here they are all lined up to give you an idea of the grain continuity With all the pieces cut to size and squared, I cut the miters at the router table Perfect miters Next at the tablesaw i cut a groove for the top in the sides, front and back and with the same setup i cut the grooves in the lid. Tape applied, ready for glue up Here it is glued up. As you can see i left the top rough from the resaw off the bandsaw. I prepped a smooth side but really like the texture. I think it will look really cool. It feels awesome. Tomorrow i will hack up this chunk to make the bottom part of the box. It will basically be the opposite; ebony sides, front and back and a zebrawood bottom. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
Popular Post ..Kev
We need to have an intervention with your use of the ebony! You're starving hundreds of G&G pieces from getting the plugs and splines they so richly deserve! And for what? A woman! Yes, she bore your children, cooked your meal, washed your clothes, bla bla bla.. Ok.. Good choice! Nice work as usual Shane!

Woodenskye
Damn Shane! That is one heck of a box to hold a piece of paper! Hopefully she likes the box more than the gift. Great work and journal as usual.

If making boxes with ebony means less G&G furniture in the world than more ebony boxes there will be ! I find most G&G really tacky. 1 hour ago, K Cooper said: Totaly agree and also wonder.... I didnt really intend to be so rushed but I just got the wood on Friday and have had no time to get in the shop since then. I hope to be putting a coat of finish on tomorrow night. sjk
I like how the texture on the top complements the grain on the zebrawood. Nice design eye there @shaneymack.
Rex Edgar
Shaneymack, What or who makes the cross-cut gauge in the photo @ the router table. Nice box, maybe some boom-boom in your future????
Chestnut
I've been meaning to try the router table trick for doing 45s i don't have a large enough 45 bit though. Box looks awesome i really like that piece of zebrawood your using. I'm going to HAVE to remember that trick for grain matching that's a good one.

If I can ever achieve perfect 45s, I think I'll borrow steal your design for setting that ebony piece into the sides with it sticking up high enough to be the base. That's clever stuff. Thanks Lester. Just buy a 45 degree chamfering bit and do the mitres on the router table. Its foolproof. Great for small boxes. 1 hour ago, Rex Edgar said: Shaneymack, What or who makes the cross-cut gauge in the photo @ the router table. Nice box, maybe some boom-boom in your future???? That cross cut gauge is made by General . I got it with the router table. Its great because it rides on the fence and not in the mitre slot. 33 minutes ago, Chestnut said: I've been meaning to try the router table trick for doing 45s i don't have a large enough 45 bit though. Tom Cancelleri
Looking good Shane. The real question here is, how did the LT18HD handle the resaw of the ebony and zebrawood. I see a fair bit of chatter in the cut. I know those woods are horribly dense, how did the saw handle it though?
midtnwoodworker
That looks awesome Shane! The miters came out perfect and the design looks great. I can't wait to see this with finish on it.

I only have a 30$ cheapo blade on there because my RK blade needs sharpening hence the chatter in the cuts. 36 minutes ago, midtnwoodworker said: That looks awesome Shane! shaneymack
Today I started by resawing the chunk of ebony into three 5/16" pieces. Just had enough. This little piece is the waste. Took the tape of the top part of the box. Im very pleased with the mitres and grain match on all four corners. I rough cut the ebony parts to length and dialed them in at the shooting board. I need a piston fit within the lid. Here is a rare sight, wispy ebony shavings.... so sexy Once pieces were fit i cut the mitres at the router table. Made sure they fit snugly in the lid Cut the grooves to accept the bottom. Cut my bottom piece out of zebrawood and made a rabbet at the tablesaw to fit in grooves in the sides. Dry fit So now this will go together like so Fit is fantastic. Sanded all inside surfaces so now it was time to glue up some ebony. Tape in place, ready for glue All glued up. Very happy with the mitres. Finishing tomorrow ! Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
..Kev
Awesome work Shane! Save those ebony shavings, they would look cool inlayed in epoxy in some future piece..
shaneymack
Awesome work Shane! Save those ebony shavings, they would look cool inlayed in epoxy in some future piece.. Funny you say to save them. Normally i can't leave my shop without it being perfectly clean. Well tonight i left the plane there on its side with the shavings undisturbed. So sexy, I needed to get a second look tomorrow. Also, it will hurt to throw them out because thats like 8$ of ebony !!!! Woodenskye
Shane, you better save those shavings in a baggy or container. You never know when you need a little motivational lift. Sort like woodworking Viagra! Box is looking great, like the continuous grain pattern of the zebra wood!

Da Hammer
Really nice work, however with all the work put into the box be careful! Could cause the creation of child number 5!

Brilliant! I've actually got one already. And now I'm wishing I wasn't working on 2 projects at the moment so I could take a swing at another box. Well she knows im up to something in there. She probably has an idea that im making her a box because last year I gave her her gift in a box also. Lol but yes, it's supposed to be a surprise. Although three of my children saw me making it yesterday so you know how that goes ! Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk Really nice work, however with all the work put into the box be careful!
