They're great tools, but do come with a learning curve, especially when trying to convert to metric at the same time. Yes. I'm struggling to wrap my head around the height adjustment puts things in the halfway mark. So 20mm puts the Domino 10mm down not 20mm. Might pick up this if it goes on sale for Black Friday. 1 Quote
Popular Post gee-dub Posted November 19, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 19, 2024 When I am waiting for finish to cure I turn to my shop "to-do" list. Some of these to-dos are practical and really useful; some are quixotic and are just to make me happy. This silly thing has been working its way to the top of the list. I picked up this Rockler brand stop at one of their garage sale events for a buck or so. The problem is that most Rockler stuff is gauged to their 5/16" hardware (which I also favor) and the extrusion I am using for the bandsaw miter gauge is not. I took a file to it and adjusted the width of the guide key. There, now I am all happy but question whether the effort equals the benefit 5 Quote
Von Posted November 20, 2024 Report Posted November 20, 2024 I took apart a shop stand and found this circular scar on the bottom of one of my shelves. This brings back a memory from ~25 years ago: this is the result when you are a new woodworker cutting a 2'x2' piece of plywood on the table saw, don't maintain proper control all the way through the cut and let the blade catch the plywood and launch it across the garage. Fortunately and amazingly no harm suffered, I learned my lesson and have not repeated this mistake. Good reminder though. 1 2 Quote
Popular Post Tom King Posted November 20, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 20, 2024 Another serious cleaning out and throwing away today. This time in the house. We cleaned out twenty-some years of dog stuff that has since been replaced with what Pam likes better, and I carried a heaping pickup load to the dump. We are due to have three litters of puppies starting in a couple of weeks. We're all ready with three setups for that now. It's a good feeling to throw stuff away that will never be any good for anything anymore. One closet that we couldn't even walk in is now completely cleaned, organized, plenty of room in it, and set up for one of the litters to be born in there. 4 Quote

My wife is doing this right now for our entire house. She finished her last day of work on the 18th and doesn't start her next job until December 2nd. Yesterday she went through all her clothes. Today she has the office on her agenda. I'm sure she'll have a couple days on the basement. We'll pass a some things on to my brother for his 16 month old and Purple Heart (or similar) is scheduled to pickup next Wednesday. I think she even found a place to take worn out shoes/clothes to recycle. 2 Quote

I was thinking if the stop failed I would rather mess up the workbench than a cast iron table saw top. Should have looked to set the depth stop. Already filled it with epoxy last night. Lordy, been there …. I’ve heard it said that there two kinds of countries on earth. Those who have never lost a war and those that use the metric system, for what that’s worth. Instead of trying to do the math, I took a block of wood and used all of the settings on my Domino and the two bits that I have and made a template of such and have never regretted it. 4 Quote

I saw you post that before I had the Domino and I remember thinking it was a good idea but I'll never have a Domino. I will have to take some time and make that so I'm not testing every time I change a setting. 1 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted November 26, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 26, 2024 Have the whole week off. Spent yesterday mostly on blowing leaves and putting up Christmas decorations. Would normally wait until this weekend but it’s upper 50s now and low 40s after Thanksgiving. Today, I’m back on the bookshelf. Milling wood so far this morning for the shelves. Hoping to get them all glued up before Thursday. I’ll bring them with us to my parents house and run them through the drum sander Thursday or Friday. 3 Quote

Popular Post legenddc Posted November 29, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted November 29, 2024 Ate waaay too much food but it was so good. Good to see all my siblings and my niece. Since we ate so much last night my dad decided we needed sausage and gravy for breakfast. I managed to get all the shelves through the drum sander. Home now and ready for a nap! 5 Quote
Popular Post Botch Posted December 1, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 1, 2024 I wasn't feeling well Wed/Thur so I didn't cook my TG dinner until today, roast duck on the Big Green Egg. Maiden Voyage for my new Typhur wireless BBQ thermometer, with two probes: Nice to sit and watch football, with this unit telling me the exact point when my duck was done (165º in the breast). I put the other probe into the thigh, it finished a lot quicker than the breast (not like a turkey) but dark meat can take some over-cooking. Probes also have "ambient" thermocouples in the probe handles, to track the temp inside the grill. Neat system! 7 Quote
legenddc Posted December 3, 2024 Report Posted December 3, 2024 Been sanding the bookshelf and then sanding some more. Also ordering some Christmas gifts. 2 Quote

Popular Post Tom King Posted December 9, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 9, 2024 Not today, but this week: We were up all night Tuesday delivering a litter of puppies. Then did the same thing again Thursday night, and again Friday night. We once again have 15 puppies here. Pam had our newest stud dog, now still a six month old puppy, registered to show Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (yesterday). She didn't go Friday and Saturday after staying up all nights, but decided to go yesterday. Nash (Starborn Prince Panache), shown in the puppy class in the breed, in spite of not even having a fully grown out coat because of his age, won Best of Breed, went on to win Group, and Pam called to tell me she'd be late getting home because he was going in the Best in Show ring. He was too obviously a puppy to be put up for BIS, but was the crowd favorite and got the loudest and most enthusiastic applause in the coliseum. Busy week. 8 Quote
Popular Post Tom King Posted December 10, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 10, 2024 I edited my previous post because I had written the last ring Nash went in as Best in Breed, but it was supposed to be Best in Show. He had already won Best in Breed to get to the Toy Group ring and then won that to make it to the Best in Show ring. I don't have a show picture. Here's a video of him on our Puppy Porch playing with younger puppies a couple of months ago. 4 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted December 10, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 10, 2024 Warmer here yesterday than it's been so in-between calls and work I got the leaves in the front of the house blown out to the street island. Will have to get the ones out under the cars whenever they're not here. Glued up the 4th leg last night. Scrapped off most of the glue on the other three. Shifting focus to sanding the stretchers tonight and possibly the bottom and fixed shelf. 4 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted December 13, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 13, 2024 Our office had a holiday party today so I went in and got nothing done. Sadly didn’t win any prizes. Left early to go help set up the stage for my daughter’s Nutcracker ballet recital tomorrow. Now just waiting for my wife to get here with the kids so I can take my son somewhere. Might go to Rockler and buy some clamps… 3 Quote
Popular Post Mark J Posted December 14, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 14, 2024 Maybe you should buy your son a clamp. Can't get them started "collecting" to early. 4 Quote
Popular Post Tom King Posted December 14, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 14, 2024 To keep this place up here, I have to watch the conditions and catch them just right for some things. Today I burned the leaves off the shoreline on the point. To do that, I need all the leaves to have fallen, for them to be dry, for the lake to be at least a little bit low, and a Northeast wind to move the burn along from the base of the point towards the end and blow the smoke out over the lake away from the surrounding houses. There is no way to rake them out of the Rip-Rap, and nowhere to blow them. I've heard comments that I have the cleanest Rip-Rap on the lake, and most have no idea how I do it because after a rain there is no evidence left. I use two Indian fire pumps. One to make fire go, and one to make fire stop. To do the whole 1/4 mile took 15 gallons of kerosene out of the one with the red Flammable label on it, and only four gallons of water to stop any potential grass fires in the dormant Bermuda. I finished one side before lunch and the other that was getting a more direct hit with the wind in not much over an hour after lunch. 4 Quote
Popular Post JohnG Posted December 14, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 14, 2024 My wife got a new car. 2025 VW ID Buzz, a throwback to the old vw bus. It’s really nice and very spacious. I’m 6’4” and have ample leg room in all three rows of seats without moving any of them. We’re both on electric vehicles now (except for my ‘73 pickup). 7 Quote
Tom King Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 I like the looks of those. I'm sure they're much more comfortable than the VW buses back in the 1960's. I spent more time riding in those belonging to friends than I would want to do a fraction of again. 1 Quote
Popular Post BillyJack Posted December 15, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted December 15, 2024 Trying to be a cook. Fighting with the wife for control of the kitchen. Been woodworking my whole life, now I want the kitchen. I like making Italian dishes. My wife says my cooking costs too much.. 4 Quote
BillyJack Posted December 15, 2024 Report Posted December 15, 2024 It’s an uphill battle for sure… I want to make home made biscuits from scratch. Wife says just buy a can of biscuits… And it’s on… 2 Quote
