Pardon me, is my age showing?

Just curious if it is just my age or just being out of tune with the modern world, but many posts have abbreviations or tools listed by a part number. or tool type etc. Many of these I have to google to find out what they mean. Living as far from the main stream as I do, I have not heard of some of the tools talked about and until I googled them had no idea what they were! So this site has opened my eyes to a modern world that is fascinating, expensive but fascinating. I had never heard of Festool or Domino until joining the group. But for an old timer, could some of the shortcuts taking in describing tools, wood, finishes etc include a full name!

I love google, because every time I look something up, a dozen other related items seem to show up! But after being around woodworking my whole life (My first project was a footstool for my dad in 1962) I worked in a cabinet shop during the early 80's for 6 years and build stuff for family and friends monthly, but It seems my woodworking education has been severely lacking. So i will continue to lurk and learn and try to incorporate some of your new stuff in my old fashioned ways!

Thanks!

Jerry

I understand how you feel. They refer to a 7518 and I am instantly googling it, only to find out I have one ! My biggest gripe is the constant use of initials , ARS etc. some you figure out after awhile ,others I just have to ask.

Domino was a game changer for me, bests the hell out of a biscuit joiner. I have a couple of Lamello brand biscuit machines, one of the finest made, but I rarely use them any more.

Internet shrunk the world.  Most of us wouldn't know a fraction of what we know if not for the information highway.  That includes me.  I'd still be hacking up 2x4s with my Dewalt contractor saw if not for the amazing gargle machine.

As for the acronyms...that's the world we live in.  I kind of hate it too but I decided there's no point in fighting so I joined the lazy parade and now I'm as guilty as everyone else.  YMMV, FWIW, BTW.

I know a dude that has been woodworking for 30 years and couldn't tell you who Festool is. If it wasn't for Marc, I wouldn't know it at all. I wouldn't know about Marc if it wasn't for the Reddit woodworking sub.

And if it wasn't for these things, I'd be a true novice that is still trying to figure out what a mortise and tenon means. The internet, while pumping my head full of years of knowledge that I otherwise would have had to accumulate on my own also filled me with a lot of those terms/abbreviations/random model numbers. I do find myself having to google stuff often as well. Model numbers usually. Or to be more exact, I amazon it. Then store it away in my memory and seem much smarter later.

Thank you Internet. You not only gave me a career, but an ability to exist. In any other time period, I'd have had to man up or quit life. It's weird to think that I have a set of skills that literally didn't exist as a career path a couple of decades ago.

Adding my bit to the anti-acronym rant: I have experience in multiple fields of interest. Acronyms are used in all of the at some point. What irks me the most is that so many folks with less wide-spread experience never seem ti realize that acronyms REQUIRE context! A given combination of 3 or 4 letters means completely different things to, for example, a woodworker and a scuba diver. And don't get me started on acronyms built from other acronyms. For an interesting perspective, check out the Acronym Finder

Oh boy. I feel ya there. I work for the Army. These people have acronym down to a science. I am part of the ASC G6, with it's parent command of AMC, and sister command JMC, but actually I am S6, contracted out to VIOPS, with a sub-contract to VTS. Sometimes I go to the COIC for my job, I get emails addressed to ALCON (3 years it took me to figure that one out) and there is still something called CONUS that I haven't figured out.

And those are just a fraction of the ones I remember. I know almost none of them as I was never a military guy.

I'm 72 and have some trouble figuring out some of the acronyms too. I do use a few myself but, I usually do an explanation of what it means also which is an exercise in total DA! (dumb @$$)

For instance, KISS (keep it simple stupid) ATFAB (anything for a buck) and HMFWIC (head mother f***er what's in charge)

It doesn't matter because the internet is just a fad anyway and it won't last. :)

Wdwerker, ARS is Atlanta Rhythm Section, right?

And now my shop is in Doraville ! It's the small suburban city they wrote the song about. It's no longer a touch of country in the city, it's an international mix of Asian , Hispanic, Black and White folks. Must be 6 varied types of Asian resturaunts in a 1/2 mile of the shop. Depending on the wind you smell a different cuisine .
