Popular Post wouldwurker
So when my wife and I moved into our first 350 sq ft studio apartment in NYC, crap like this was en vogue They hang on the wall....all I remember is that they cost too much.........so 13 years later my wife asks me to make something similar, but entirely of walnut. Which seeing as it's a 8" x 8" cube, that would be a monumental waste of walnut........so I sanded off all the paint from my overpriced cube, recovered from storage. I had some shopsawn walnut 'veneer' left over from my pizza peels (couldn't bare to plane away all that wood going from 4/4 to 1/2")...... veneer is in quotes because it was about 3/16" thick.......it actually worked well in my favor though. Once I veneer glued it on at 3/16" I resawed it again, but this time right off the glued up cube....no vacuum press here. Glued up with caulks and clamps................ Flush trim bit made short work of the overhanging veneer. Finish is Danish oil. This was also the first project on which i didn't use sandpaper. All machine mark removal and finish prep was done with a card scraper only.

wtnhighlander
Looks like a nice block of walnut, Vinny. Now what do you do with it??? The next one needs to incorporate a secret compartment, or something.
Coop
I can definately, almost, see the need for one of these. And now you have two? Pretty cool job. Hopefully you guys now have more than the 350 sq. ft. To accomadate both.
Thdewitt
.... Or a water bong. Funniest thing I have heard on Wood Talk online. The people at this Hilton think I am crazy for spitting my coffee on the table.

Eric.
Yeah me too...I just never remember saying, "Dude, pass me that water bong." I think I just kind of pointed and grunted. Maybe the words "that thing" made it out.

Pwk5017
I think it looks great. At first glance, my perception of scale was way off, and i thought this was a small coffee table type thing.
JosephThomas
Looks nice...was there a compelling reason to veneer the back too?
wouldwurker
Looks nice...was there a compelling reason to veneer the back too? The same reason you finish the back of a piece of furniture against a wall.

I suppose I asked because I wondered if it was being used in a different way than normal, where the back is always against the wall and never seen. For normal furniture, it makes sense to finish the back because you might end up moving it to the middle of the room. Not trying to nitpick, just curious if the veneered back is visible, or if it was going to be used out in the open or something.
Eric.
Let me paraphrase for Vinny... "It was the right thing to do."
wouldwurker
It's not visible, but when it comes off the wall it would look amateur hour without it.
