Cochese
Hmm, I have been looking at the Rotex for refinishing furniture, particularly ones that had been painted. As it stands right this second, I am staring at an old dresser my wife has that has a bunch of flowers she painted on it when she was young. She'd like a glossy white to match my office stuff. Get a 150/5 to pair with my 150/3, or stick with the plan for a Rotex?
Eric.
I have a 150/5 and I used to have a 150/3. No noticeable difference except the /5 might be a bit faster. Maybe. Barely. If you want to refinish I'd get a Rotex 150 and/or RO90. Adding a 150/5 won't gain you much.
ben_r_
Okay, so now its between the ETS EC 150/5 EQ and the Rotex RO 150 FEQ... Or the 125 equivalents if I want to stay with a 5" sander.

I could probably get this thing done with the belt sander and what I have, but what fun would that be?
Eric.
Slightly less fun than doing it with a new shiny Festool. Refinishing...no thanks. Combines the two worst parts of woodworking and eliminates all the fun parts. Poop on that.

No noticeable difference between the two old models but the difference will be significant between the old 150/3 and the new ets ec 150/5. Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk Fesporn? You know it ! It removes material faster? How so? More interested in the comparison between the old 150/5 and new EC 150/5. I thought it was just better ergonomically and had some fancy worthless crap like a brake...but what makes it sand faster?

It's a more powerful motor, and it is brushless. Nearly impossible to stall and you can practically sit on it while sanding and you won't stall it. Your technique won't be worth a damn and the sanding quality will look slightly better than dog crap, but it's a more powerful sander. I will say this, I find the ETS EC to have more vibration due to less mass and to be back heavy like a rotex. While it is lower and brings your hand closer to the work piece. I couldn't justify dumping my ETS 150s for one though as the only real plus is a pad brake to save valuable seconds to put it back down. =)
estesbubba
The ETS 150 really looks like a top-heavy sander that would suck to use but I was surprised how smooth it is.

Ive found that with this sander even when you do push a little more than you are supposed to the result is the same- a perfect finish. I think it is because it is so strong that it is able to continue its proper orbit (unlike most other sanders ) and not cause pigtails. I sanded a staircase last week and used the ets ec 150/5 after the ras 115 with 40 grit on it. I put 80 grit on the ets and proceeded to beat the crap out of it. Then i put on the 12p grit and did the same. Put a coat of stain on and no pigtails. Im telling you, this sander is the best. Edited for bad laguage. Eric.
I'll have to demo the two sanders side by side. I can't believe there's that much of a difference. I don't think power is that important in a finish sander anyway. Rotex in direct gear mode...yeah. Finish sander, not so much. It's like putting a Corvette engine in a go-kart...don't really get the point.

My last go to sander was a metabo (made in Germany) that you could change between 3mm stroke and 5mm stroke. This ets ec 150/5 is way faster and does a way better job. I could also have no idea what im talking about here. Who know. Wouldn't be the first time. Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk
Brendon_t
I love the new ec, I about giggled the first time I chucked up some 80 to it and still had about zero vibration. It is a bit back heavy with the hose installed. All in, id buy it again. I can't compare it to the old ets but it is a crap ton faster than my old dewalt or pc. Cliff
Just buy all the festool sanders, test them and return the ones you don't want.
