pkinneb
Haven't had any time to work on the stools since Sunday but finally received my star knob in the mail to finish my Mike Pekovich designed shooting board. Who knew finding a star knob could be so difficult after three stores and no luck I finally ordered the $1 knob on eBay and paid the $5 in shipping. Also got my homework done for a stained glass class i'm taking...ready for sodder. Back to the bar stools tomorrow.
shaneymack
That stained glass is very cool ! What are your plans for it? Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk
pkinneb
Thanks Shane! Taking a couple classes this year to learn the process for a couple projects on my list. Later this year I plan on making some arts and crafts lamps that will have panels in them and also working on a wine cabinet design that will have doors with panels in them. This one will find its home in our master bedroom closet we have a high window that gets morning sun in so should look pretty cool, I hope
Popular Post pkinneb
Got some time in the shop today and got the rough sculpting of the seats done... First up I made a quick template to keep me in the ball park when doing the 2nd and 3rd seat Then I got out my RAS 115 sander with 40 grit paper while not necessary it allows me to work inside, the grinder just makes to big of mess. The dust collection isn't great but between it and a 5" hose off my dust collector its tolerable. I use this for the rough work Than I move to my RO 90 sander, if I could only have one sander to build this furniture this would be the one (it worked great on my stitch and glue kayak too) Then my long board to clean up the edges Love having a workbench...can't believe I went all these years without one ...and we have three seats I will do a bit of clean up through the grits on Sunday and then start rounding over the edges at the router table.
Popular Post pkinneb
Got a couple hours in the shop today and got the seats sanded through the grits and the round overs done. Hope to get the leg round overs going this week so I can have all three stools glued up by the end of next weekend. Really missing my out feed table as soon as these are done I am knocking one out...

shaneymack
As Mick mentioned, the matching grain in the three seats is pretty cool. Whatchya got clamped up on the bench in the background? I have spent more time over the last few years with wood selection I don't scrimp here to save a board or what not, which is why you see an extra seat on the bench it just did not match at all so I started over Shane regarding what's clamped to the bench...I am sure some will have different ideas but it works for me. Once milled I clamp parts to the bench until glue ups are complete it keeps things from moving around if I don't get back to the shop for a week or two...in this case its the front and rear legs.
Popular Post pkinneb
Got back out to the shop today after traveling on business most of the week... I did complete my stain glass project during the week but no stool work until today. No that I know the process I may make one to cover the whole window but for now back to woodworking 1st up I trimed the excess wood around the joints Next up was to cut some material away from the inside of the legs to lighten up the look a bit Fronts and backs all done Next up was to rout round overs wherever I could to cut down on sculpting later...but first I made a donut that I saw in a Canadian Woodworks youtube video so that I could round over the sections I relieved earlier. Turned it round on the lathe then drilled a hole big enough for the bit to pass through Then I routed a 5/8" round over on the outside and mounted it to a zero clearance insert for my router table It worked well. All the legs are rounded over and ready for glue up You can't get everything but my goal was to get baselines so when I sculpt I have a good idea of where I am trying to go. I was able to get one glued up before having to quit for the day. Next up glue the remaining two together and move on to the stretchers.
RichardA
I like that you're showing off the knots.
Popular Post pkinneb
Made some progress but not much to show today...First off I glued up the second stool, then I cleaned up one of my joints just to see how I did, not perfect but not bad I can live with it. I think I will like working with walnut when I do my rocker its a bit softer which should make getting tight joints as well as the sculpting just a bit simpler for me. Then I worked on the front stretcher Then the rear I spent quite a bit of time determining placement and size. I thinned down the rear a 1/4" so it didn't look so bulky. Then I rounded them over before glue up ...and finally I glued them up. Tomorrow I will get the last stool glued up, make and install the front and back stretcher on stool 2, and make and install the side stretchers and seat back on stool one, if all goes well.

They have been fun, learning a lot but I like to learn new things so that works out well. Today I started out by working on the side stretchers for stool 1. Ended up removing 3/16" from the inside and outside edges to thin them up a bit. Then worked on the back rest, first cut the blank Then cut the profile and rounded over the bottom edge I also cut the front and back stringers for stool 2. Then I epoxied parts on all three stools... Thought I would click a quick pic for the journal when a chill went down my spine...Oh SH$% the front stretcher I just epoxied in is upside down Luckily I had just done it so I was able to correct it with out issue. The parts pile is getting shorter... But the burn can is over flowing LOL Off tomorrow running the red, white and boom twin cities half marathon then coming home to smoke some chicken thighs. Happy 4th of July to everyone in the states!!
Popular Post pkinneb
Got some more time in the shop today not much to show picture wise but the front and rear stretchers as well as the back rests are all epoxied in place. I also started drilling and screwing Spax screws to add a mechanical faster to them. I bought 12" drill bits (1/8" and 3/16") to drill pilot holes for the 3 1/2" Spax screws. I got them because they were about half the price of the 6" drill bits for whatever reason. They actually helped line up the angles but I had to watch the flex. One tip if your going in at a steep angle drill your forstner hole first then take an awl and make a new starter hole higher up so the screw doesn't bugger up the forstner hole as you drive it in. Next up finish the side stretchers on stool 2 & 3, finish the last 8 screws, and make and install about 45 plugs. At that point construction will be complete and the sculpting can begin.

Lets cut some ebony plugs...I used a Veritas 1/2" plug cutter in the drill press to make these, I had never used one before works great! ...and installed Next I trimmed off the tops of the front legs with my hand saw. CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE!!! Now lets do some sculpting...should have everything I need
Popular Post pkinneb
Started sculpting on the backs today ...got creative with my work holding on the fronts After drawing on some guide lines I rough out the curve with a grinder and kutzall wheel I move to the Festool RAS115 for refinement and dust collection Than to a RO sander Then a homemade long board to insure the curve is fair After re-positioning the stool I start on the backs following close to the same process only I use a rasp after rough grinding/ sanding Rough out of backs complete Next up more sculpting...

Coop
Paul, really cool. These things are awesome! Question. The only time I've used epoxy was on flat surfaces where the squeeze out could be sanded. Are you going to sand yours or is there a chemical that can remove it?
