Popular Post wnaziri
Now that my first project for the year is completed (event though I took a mulligan), on to the next one: I have decided to make the laundry hamper that Mark made a while back (http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/woven-panel-rolling-hamper-pt-1/). He used walnut but I intend to use cherry. The sides are made with woven 1/8 strips. I happen to have good amount of 8/4 cherry left over from my workbench build. Broke down the 8/4 piece with my jig saw, which has become my go to method of breaking down rough lumber. I use the Milwaukee 18V jig saw with 4" Festool blade. It really works well. Did the rest of the breakdown on my bandsaw. This took quite a while, cutting 1/8" and 1/4 strips. After cutting the all the pieces to final dimension, I did something different on this project. I decided to smooth all the pieces (except the thin strips) with my LN No. 4 Bronze plane. It was a lot of fun and the end product is amazing. I am using the Domino for the joinery. Here is the current state of the project with all the framework completed. Next will be 1/4" mortises for the vertical strips and trying to do the weave. I need to dust off my drum sander to dial in the 1/8" strips. I did not want to risk a disaster by trying to plane the strips to final thickness. I think l got them down to 3/16".

Popular Post wnaziri
More progress. After cutting essentially all the components, I gave them all a final sanding to 340, which was really easy after having planed all the pieces first. For the bottom and back panels, I decided to veneer the BB plywood with cherry, putting my Vacuum to good use. I pre-finished before assembly. I did a wash coat of 1 pound cut of blond shellac on all the pieces. The shellac did raise the grain, so I gave it all a final sanding with 400. Started the assembly with sides first: All the big pieces assembled: The final assembly was tricky but doable. The lid, finish, and hardware to go. I am leaning towards lacquer spray final finish.

Klappco
Love it. You are doing really cool work! I. have pondered building a half-height version of it in Jatoba for our living room. It would be used as a firewood and kindling bin for our fireplace that I built a Jatoba mantle for. I think that design would be perfect. MattF
Looks great. Showed my wife, she wants one now. Unfortunately I do not have a domino, so M&T joinery it is.
Popular Post wnaziri
I am going to declare this project completed (even though I am still waiting for the torsion hinges and the cotton laundry bags to be delivered. I waited too long to order these items because I really thought it this project would take longer.) Anyhow, I had applied wash coat of shellac on all the components. After assembly, some light sanding with 220 in a few spots and I was ready to spray some lacquer. I believe I did 5 coats of satin lacquer on all parts. On to the next project: a curved writing desk for my daughter.

Coop
How heavy is the lid and which hinges do you have ordered?

The lid is probably about 5-6 pounds. I used solid flame cherry floating panels for the top instead of 1/4" plywood, so its a bit heavier than the one Marc did. I have ordered the 15 pound torsion hinges.
