Popular Post jmaichel
After over a year of work and many highs and lows, I am happy to report the completion of my Classic Workbench! It has been a pretty long and crazy ride. Mistakes were made along the way but overall I am happy with how it turned out. My biggest blunder happened on the chop. I accidently cut the bevels on the inside of the chop and not outside. I fixed the mistake by cutting out the bevel at the top and glueing in a piece of scrap. I am not thrilled with how the chop turned out but it will serve its purpose for now. I have not decided on a finish yet for the bench. I am contemplating painting the base (cough cough) to match the color of my joinery bench and Dutch Toolchest. Then again I might just leave it unfinished for now. Some quick stats. The bench is 7' long x 24" wide. The top is made out of poplar and is just a hair under 4" thick. The Base is also made out poplar and the shelf is pine. The chop is also poplar (wish I had gone with something else but I got lazy). The vise is a Benchcrafted Classic Vise with the Crisscross Retro. I also installed a planing stop. Actually, I have two planing stops. When the bench was upside and backwards, I accidently cut the planing stop in the wrong end of the bench. I went with 1" dogholes and the holdfast is from Crucible Tools.

jjongsma
It probably wasn't very funny to you, but I admit I laughed at the planing stop on the wrong side Looks like a great bench.

Tom King
Planing left handed sometimes saves the time it takes to turn the board around.

mdbuilder
Nice work James There is a bench under there somewhere LOL! It is finished with a couple coats of watco danish oil (natural fwiw), been about 7 years now and you can still readily pop off glue blobs with a chisel plane (ziiiip!).
