Popular Post pkinneb
Just a quick build journal on this years Xmas gift. The idea came from a post a colleague of mine made on Facebook I thought hey I can do that with what I have on hand, so hear goes. First up I dug out an 8/4 maple board I had leftover from my workbench build After milling it up I cut it into strips Then glued them up While they were drying I worked on a template took two tries After flattening them on the J/P a ran them through the drum sander to bring them to final thickness 5/8" Then I was ready to cut them out. I used double back take and cut as close to the template as I could, I cleaned them up with a spiral cutter on the router table Next I added a 3/16" round over to both sides and added a hole in the handle. Have I mentioned how much I love these Makita battery trim routers Sanded them up In preparation for the Epoxy I applied tape to the backs to keep from getting epoxy all over but honestly this may have been more trouble then it was worth, more on that later Then using some left over countertop epoxy I had I added epoxy to the handle ends of the boards. For those that may have noticed I pulled the two best boards out just incase it didn't work out the way I had hopped lol. You do two layers one with the design and colors and then a clear coat over that after waiting 24 hrs. The epoxy takes about 30 days to fully cure so these should not be used this for this years xmas but are dry to the touch within 24 hours. Once dry I started sanding and peeling of the tape on the back. Honestly I think doing it without the tape may have been easier it was kind of a pain to get the tape off but some 80 grit on the RO sander did the job. On a couple of boards the top coat ran over which really bummed me out but it sanded right off so no issues after all. The I finished the boards with 3 coats of Walrus food safe oil followed by their vegan wax. Already for tomorrow and not a moment too soon Have a great Xmas everyone!!

drzaius
Nice, you made that look easy I wonder if removing the tape just as the epoxy is setting would be easier.
Coop
Very nice. So in pic 3, the width of each strip is actually the thickness of the 8/4 board after milling it?
pkinneb
So just to be clear I stole the idea from an Instagram post my colleague made, Unfortunately design is not my forte but I have become pretty adept at stealing others designs 12 hours ago, drzaius said: I wonder if removing the tape just as the epoxy is setting would be easier. I thought about that but you get kinda messy doing it so I was concerned I would get it everywhere. One thing I didn't try was to heat up the epoxy the next day with a heat gun and then pull it up that may have worked. 11 hours ago, Coop said: So in pic 3, the width of each strip is actually the thickness of the 8/4 board after milling it? Correct just shy of an 1 3/4 for these but its really open to what you have availble.

Remove the tape when it's set just enough to not flow & make a mess. Hitting it with a heat gun might help the edge to smooth out.

TerryMcK
Interesting idea. I think with my OCD I would have done it with a straight transition line but that’s me.
