The front and back are perfect, Unless someone has a method to make the sides longer they will be going on the firewood pile... Ace hardware has wood stretchers. Found near the left handed monkey wrenches... 3 Quote
Belle City WW Posted July 27, 2021 Report Posted July 27, 2021 You are doing a great job on the Chest of Drawers! Don't be so hard on yourself, a little bit of sawdust, (which it looks from the pics that you may have a little of that around ) and some ca glue, and you are in business! You have done a much better job than I could do at this point! Keep up the good work! 1 1 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted July 28, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 28, 2021 Found a piece from my thicknessed stack large enough and with an OK color match to the front to cut a new left side from. For the right side I needed to go to a fresh board and do the complete milling evolution. Anyway, both now cut to the correct length and ready to start over 4 1 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted July 29, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 29, 2021 Ok, back making progress. 2corners down, 2 to go. 6 Quote
mdbuilder Posted July 29, 2021 Author Report Posted July 29, 2021 I sawed the tails and removed most of the waste on the long front board this morning. Tonight I'll chisel to the base line and do the pins on the front of the side boards. Might get to the template I need to mark out the arches on all 4 base pieces for band sawing out the waste. The big knot on the back board is in the waste for instance 1 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted July 29, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 29, 2021 Done dovetailing the base, on to making the template to mark out the curved cuts. 3 Quote
treeslayer Posted July 30, 2021 Report Posted July 30, 2021 Looks great, well worth the effort, going to be a beautiful piece 1 Quote
BillyJack Posted July 30, 2021 Report Posted July 30, 2021 Turning out nice. I'll skip the RAS parts.lol Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted July 30, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 30, 2021 And the rest, still needs some sanding 3 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted July 31, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted July 31, 2021 The base is glued up, used the somewhat new clear gorilla polyurethane glue which supposedly does not foam and does not need moisture added to one side for wood. Adds a lot of lubricity when assembling. With the large arches cut out on the base pieces you really can't be pounding on things if the fibres swell like they would with wood glue. 4 Quote
mdbuilder Posted July 31, 2021 Author Report Posted July 31, 2021 All the glue blocks added before breaking for lunch. I've got the inner cross grain post stacks fabricated, goal is to get the base glued to the case and cove routed by the end of the day. Maybe glue on the cove, we'll see. 1 Quote
mdbuilder Posted July 31, 2021 Author Report Posted July 31, 2021 The base is now glued to the case at the front and front of the side. The rear side blocks and rear blocks get screws of course. Cross grain posts are in. Cleaning up the dovetails was a work holding challenge but my leg vise + sliding leg vise grabbed the 40" wide assembly 2 Quote

wtnhighlander Posted August 1, 2021 Report Posted August 1, 2021 That double vise setup looks mighty handy for a situation like that! Quote

Yep, I am pretty happy with it. When I built the bench I made the sliding leg vise and a sliding Deadman. You can remove both or leave em installed. I actually use the vise much more often than the Deadman, it is like a twin screw but far more flexible. Cheap to, the vise screws are $45. Might have been less than $30 10 years ago when I built it 1 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted August 1, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 1, 2021 Was planning on milling drawer stock today but didn't get to it. Found I really needed a shooting board to get the cove miters properly fitted so the was the afternoon task at hand. 4 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted August 2, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 2, 2021 After adding a little bit of sawdust and ca glue as previously recommended , some sanding and wiping with some thinner. Not too bad. 5 Quote
treeslayer Posted August 2, 2021 Report Posted August 2, 2021 Not too bad at all, those look great! Well done sir 1 Quote
mdbuilder Posted August 3, 2021 Author Report Posted August 3, 2021 After a couple hours at the heavy machinery, drawer parts, lots of drawer parts. Fronts still to come. 1 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted August 3, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 3, 2021 Time to do a little work in reverse so to speak, wrestling the case on and off the outfeed table has gotten unmanageable . This morning I removed all the removable parts, and labeled where they go, probably 20 pounds at least? Anyway, with the back in place you can't get a grip on it etc. etc. I may start the finishing process on the interior pretty soon. It is just 2 wash coats of shellac for the inside and there are a lot of parts to spread out so it would be an early win. 3 Quote
mdbuilder Posted August 3, 2021 Author Report Posted August 3, 2021 After milling all the drawer sides and backs my poplar pile was getting pretty skimpy. Facebook messaged the local guy I got the last load from to see if he had any left. Yep, so I picked up another 30 board feet for $34. Plenty to get me through the set of drawer bottoms 1 Quote
Popular Post mdbuilder Posted August 4, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 4, 2021 With the lengths all around 50" and the part sizes 37" for the drawer bottoms there will be some scrap, LOL! Fortunately @ a buck a bf that is ok. Mix of 6", 10" and one 15"er 3 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 This is progressing nicely! Thanks for keeping the project thread updated. Quote
