Popular Post Coop Posted January 23 Popular Post Report Posted January 23 Dave, stand bye, I’m booking you and Jan flights out of Des Moines to Houston for this afternoon! We’re having temps in the mid 20’s starting Sunday for three days and it will give y’all a chance to thaw out. 3 3 Quote
Ron Swanson Jr. Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 This was when i got to work this morning. It was -24 when i left the house. It's warmed up to a balmy -15 at the moment. On the plus side, i haven't seen highways this empty since Covid. 1 3 Quote
Popular Post gee-dub Posted January 23 Popular Post Report Posted January 23 It is surprising how we learn to live where we live. My ex-wife lived in North Dakota. Once it got into the 40s they left their jackets at home. I did a job once with a guy who was born and bred in Scottsdale, AZ. The hotel room got down to 72 degrees and he was looking for a blanket. Arizona and other places have this geography as well. We get to surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon. I think somewhere between Flagstaff and Mount Montezuma in AZ would have suited me as well although I would have had to give up the beach. Being milti-generational SoCal, that would be hard ;-( @Ron Swanson Jr. - I did a job for a few months in MN. It took me a while before I caught on . . . When I would stop to ask for directions (pre-GPS) folks would say "go right (rot) down (don) the road till you come to the lake, then turn right". There are lakes EVERYWHERE!!!! 4 Quote
Popular Post Mark J Posted January 23 Popular Post Report Posted January 23 We're at a roasty -10 (actual) / -30 (wind chill). I'm not even going to go out to check the mail today. 3 Quote

I guess it's all about what you've acclimated to. 2 Quote

Popular Post drzaius Posted January 23 Popular Post Report Posted January 23 We've had over 2 weeks of above freezing temps but sadly it's back to winter with -19° C. 3 Quote
Tom King Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 In Hawaii it's 84 in Summer and 82 in Winter. In Winter kids can be seen wearing coats going to school. 2 Quote

Leave it to the Canadians to give you some perspective. I cry about the cold. They say "-20F? That's cute." And go on with their day in much colder temps. You gotta be tougher 'n a $2 steak to live there! Quote
Tom King Posted January 23 Report Posted January 23 The bad part about cold here is we're right on some line where we get ice instead of snow if the conditions are just wrong. It doesn't happen often, but looks like we're in for it this time. We're supposed to get up to an inch of ice coming in Saturday night. This means that there will be a very large area of power outages because at 1/2" of ice on power lines, they start coming down. The weight drops a lot of trees on lines too. The way it's looking, we might be out of power for a week. Next week we are supposed to have two days above freezing at 35 for a high, so it will probably stay here for over a week. People from farther North say folks down here don't know how to drive on snow, but they've always been the ones I've pulled out of ditches with the tractor. It's not the snow that gets you, but solid slick ice. 2 Quote

Popular Post gee-dub Posted January 23 Popular Post Report Posted January 23 @treeslayer - Ya gotta love it where you can spit on the sidewalk and it freezes before it hits and skips a few times. At the other end of the spectrum there are videos of folks out here cracking an egg on their car hood . . . and it cooks. I mean it only gets to 120-something in death valley in July (134 is the record so far). That's about 4 hours from here. Mojave is closer and cooler but the thunderstorms are amazing. When the weather system backs up against the hills the static electricity creates some serious lightning shows. And you wonder why desert tortoises are so hard to find. I would hide too if I lived out there. 3 Quote

You haven't really tinkled outdoors until you've done it at -25º F, stream is frozen before it hits the ground and "tinkles"! Those winter dispatches to the missile silos in Grand Forks ND were an experience... 1 1 1 Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted January 24 Popular Post Report Posted January 24 A pic of the last pick of the season. Better fried than frozen! Actually, they’re a little small to fry so I’ll put them in a couple of these shallow boxes, cover them with newspaper and put them under the guest bed to ripen. 5 Quote
