Popular Post Mzdadoc
My wife suggested I make these as gifts since she loved hers so much. These are for mom, mom in law, and sister. I just have to make one for my daughter and then I'm done. Been in the shop for about 10 hours straight........ Heavenly! Oh...... They're candle center pieces I just haven't bought the candles yet.

wdwerker
You should make one with one live edge ! That would be an interesting contrast to the simple elegance.
Tom Cancelleri
Awesome design. I love the legs. I'm slightly confused by the cut in the center though. It's not cut through, is it like a decorative dado or is there something in the construction that warrants it?
Mzdadoc
wdwerker I just happen to have two pieces left and one has a thick live edge. The legs on the ones I've made are double lap joints I think is the correct term. How could I do it with the live edge. Also there's a 1 1/2" dado that raps around and with a live edge that would be tough to get square. Ideas????
wdwerker
Double face tape a scrap on to the bottom . That will give you an edge to ride on the fence and miter gauge to cut the joinery. I use the powerful stuff they sell for wood turners to stick on a faceplate.
..Kev
Steve's correct.. Turners tape works well for this type of stuff. Cut a bit of the live edge back in the joint to get a nice flat surface and then cut the appropriate matching depth in your leg so that everything matches up. Eric.
Or face the live edges to the inside...could look cool, could look stupid. I've seen a bench with a similar design with the live edges facing each other. It was killer looking.

bushwacked
How did you make the legs?
Tom Cancelleri
Zero clearance insert with a dado blade, miter gauge, miter sled.

Tom Cancelleri
I built something kind of similar using half lap joints and a little platform for holding a Raspberry Pi for an innovation project at work. Might be fun to make a candle holder. Maybe throw in some curves. I've got some time tomorrow and a ton of square walnut leftovers from my cutting boards. Mzdadoc
He's right about how the legs were made. No magic there. Finished my last one from start to finish today and now they're all clamped and glued. Tomorrow starts the finish so hopefully two can get in the mail in time for Christmas. Tom Cancelleri
What are you going to be using for finish? I would go with a rubbed oil finish as it's not something that would take a lot of abuse so protection isn't a huge factor. Goes on easy, no need for buffing between coats and all that jazz. Mzdadoc
T Here is what I'm using but I still have to sand between coats don't I? YES?NO? General Finishes Arm R Seal oil & urethane topcoat
..Kev
I usually light sand with 600 between coats just to take off any nibs that might be there.
