Popular Post h3nry
One of my windows was looking a bit plain and needed a pelmet over the curtains ... I had some spare cherry laying around the garage so ... The whole project is basically just a bit of moulding forming three sides of a box, with a plywood top to hold it all rigid. I didn't have any boards 9ft long, so it had to be made in two parts and joined with something decorative in the middle, a little step at the corners to keep it interesting, and a couple of small turnings to add a flourish. The moulding is a composite of five pieces each side ... so ten sticks need to be milled for a bit of a workout. Then the fun starts ... sticking the moulding profiles onto the wood. I decided to go with a "Dentil" moulding pattern. Finally the moulding ready for glue-up. A mock-up of the central feature ... the two pieces of moulding will be attached with dovetails at the back. As usual there was much procrastination deciding what should be carved on the panel ... eventually the swans won. Since it was a thick block of 8/4 wood I was able to use about twice the relief that I have tried before, so the heads and necks of the swans were almost fully 3D ... I'm not sure I really did a good job of using the high relief. The finial was turned out of lacewood. At a little over 9ft long it's the longest thing I've made, and definitely doesn't fit on the bench ... one more coat of finish and it's ready. And finally installed over the window. Just for fun I added an LED mood-lighting strip across the top. Installed above head height, nobody will notice the imperfections in the carving.
Ronn W
Very nicely done. I think the deeper relief worked out very well. Great job.

gee-dub
We are always our toughest critic. I think the carving looks great. The deeper levels and relief around the heads really make the swans pop. I am loving the lacewood detail. It is fun to include things that some people will notice right off while others may notice later. Very elegant look and feel. Makes my mini-blind plastic valances seem wanting

curlyoak
h3nry, I appreciate your high level of skills. Is wood working your hobby or profession?
Popular Post h3nry
Woodwork is very much just a hobby ... I try to make one nice piece of furniture every year, and try to challenge myself a little on each piece ... although I'd better get on with it if I want to get something started before the end of this year!
