Popular Post Broadrick
It's been a super busy summer so here's my abbreviated project journal. My grandpa's legs pretty much quit working, so I figured if he's going to be stuck sitting, might as well be in a comfortable chair. June 20th: started build with seat glue-up. Lesson learned: I should have wetted the boards to tell which direction the curl would be most visible from after finishing. These boards look better from the rear. Waiting on tool delivery so skipped ahead to rocker form fab and rocker glue-up June 24th. No pics of the front legs but I learned to make sure and double check router plane depth the hard way. July 5th: Marc was right, the 6° table saw set-up was "a little dicey" for the rear legs. Took a little time off and got married on July 9th. July 15th. Seat bowled out and arms roughed in. July 21st. The cherry was so smooth to sculpt I had quick progress using the small spokeshave prepping the spindles for the tenon maker. July 22nd. Crest rail fabbed. Lesson learned: cherry DOES in fact burn easily. July 27th. Two inward facing curves for the rear rocker tips. (If there's any fans of Frank Frazetta's "Death Dealer" you'll know where I got this from) And first coat of finish! My uncle said Grandpa was have health issues again so The Bride and I drove from St. Paul to Clinton Ia on August 5th to deliver it. It was awesome to be able to do this for Grandpa. Everything I learned about woodworking I learned from him, it really sucks that he can't stand at the table saw anymore. Super big thank you to Marc Spagnuolo, without his guild build I wouldn't have been able to expedite this project and I was really feeling the urgency with grandpa's health. And I can't thank my bride enough. She was willing to postpone the honeymoon so that I could do this. And took a day off work to drive to Iowa while I slept in the truck after working nightshift all week. I think I owe her a week in one of those huts over the water in Fiji!
..Kev
Awesome! And pretty darn quick too! Great job! Did you use the T&T finish?
wtnhighlander
That is awesome! The Frazetta influence is a very unique touch. Looks like Grandpa loves it!
Broadrick
I did use the T&T. Three coats each, just like Marc recommended. I was staying awake after nightshift to sand/recoat for the week leading up to delivery.

You're a good man dude, and lucky to have such an understanding wife and grateful and influential grandfather! You're right, I'm very lucky to have these two people. I spoke with Grandpa yesterday, he said he sits in it twice a day. Once after breakfast with his tea and once in the evening. The spindles feel great and help his low back but the cancer has taken a lot of muscle mass so he can only sit on an unpadded seat for 30-45 minutes before "his boney butt" starts to hurt. He said its damn near as nice to look at as to sit in. Thanks for the kind words gents.

shaneymack
Great work on the chair. It's pretty awesome that you were able to do this for your gramps. I hope it gives him some comfort every time he sits in and and looks at it. Like he said, it's damn near as nice to look at as to sit in. I have one in my home and enjoy just looking at it! Beautiful job and congrats on the wedding! Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk

And yea, I hope it gives comfort while he deals with the pills and pain. Even if it's only an hour or so a day.

gee-dub
Beautifully done. Sam sure left his mark behind, didn't he? That cherry is going to age wonderfully. Sure to be treasured.

There's definitely something special about Maloof design. Tracing the hard line from left arm, up around the horns, and back down to the right arm is inspiring. And just a super cool thing to do! Alan G, Gary, gee-dub: thanks gents.
Bulldog
Beautiful rocker, beautiful bride, beautiful story. I think it is a wonderful thing you've done for your Grandfather. As I age, the thing I value above all else is time. The time you've taken to make this for him, and the time he gets to enjoy it... is invaluable. It's beautifully crafted, and I have no doubt that it will stand as a testament of your love for a very, very long time.
