HickWillis
I picked up a very nice piece of Sapele that I am going to use to build a liquor cabinet for some friends getting married. I have enough to make pretty much all of the shell of the cabinet and the door. I will need to accent it with another type of wood (or get more Sapele). Are there any common (and not super exotic) woods that pair with Sapele?

HickWillis
Just did some browsing of some images that used Sapele and Maple. I found a hutch of some sort that looked awesome. Maple is definitely an option!
BonPacific
If you are looking for a mild contrast, or complementary colors, Walnut and Sapele can look good. Particularly if you can get some air-dried, or at least not steamed, the red in the walnut picks up the Sapele. Here's a few pictures I found.
HickWillis
That looks nice too, I have to decide how much contrast I want in the finished piece.
Brendon_t
With sapele, I like sapele. It's a beautiful wood with great color. Low contrast like cherry runs the risk of both looking muddy. High contrast and there could be too much going on visually.
..Kev
Depends really on how much? Too much and the piece looks trashy. If I have small accents to do, I like to go the opposite and use Wenge to ensure that contrast stays there long term. Otherwise, I usually just stick with Sapele. wtnhighlander
If sapele was the accent, I'd agree with Llama. Otherwise, I'm digging those walnut examples. Ooooo, walnuuuuut!
Llama
I actually wasn't kidding... Doing a remodel at the local Hilton now, and almost everything is walnut with white quartz tops. It's growing on me.

HickWillis
I'm liking the walnut examples. That may be the winner
BillyJack
I've considered Walnut and Sapele for a dining table and chairs and other pieces. But that's me...
sheperd80
Another vote for maple, or just more sapele. Ive never liked the way walnut goes with reddish colored woods, cherry being an exception in some cases. I think woods like sapele do best by themselves. jjongsma
I'm also not a fan of walnut and sapele. Something about it just looks "off" to me. Taste is a personal thing of course, but I don't think I'd ever use those two woods together.
Janello
How about genuine mahogany and sapele? Using sapele for the accent wood. Anyone ever try this?
wtnhighlander
How about genuine mahogany and sapele? Using sapele for the accent wood. Anyone ever try this? Disclaimer- I have never used either species, so this judgement is from photo / video experience alone. I think mahogany and sapele are so close in appearance that it would just make the piece look "off" a bit.
wdwerker
Did that by mistake one time many years ago. The Sapele was in the African Mahogany bin. Got it for a feature strip that ran across the whole piece. It turned out pretty good.
Eric.
Yeah I agree with Ross...that combo is no bueno. That would be like putting red oak and white oak together. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

He kept raving about how great they were and how much better they looked because they hadn't been steamed, and how horrible steamed walnut is and how he can spot it a mile away. I just smiled and wrote his ticket.

The dealer stuff is brown, and pretty, but didn't hold a candle to the backyard stuff.

I'm a fan of darker accents with sapele and cousins; walnut, ebony, ebonized wood of choice. That is, as opposed to sapele and something light like maple.
