Popular Post shaneymack
So i put the chairs on hold because i did not want to sculpt them indoors. The bubinga dust is terrible. Since it's my dads 65th bday this year, I decided to make him a nice gift. I got in touch with my 4 siblings and got them on board to pitch in for all the materials to make dad the guild grandfather clock ! Each sibling will come over and help out (in some small way) and we will take pics of the clock being built by all of us (mostly me lol) So along with the clock, dad will get a photo album of all his kids making this heirloom piece for him. This first post won't have my normal journal detail because I was kinda slacking on the photos. Don't worry, I will up my game from here on out, I promise. When i brought home 100+ bd ft of qswo I realised I need a bigger shop. Some nice stuff! Got all the front parts done. Dominos baby ! Bought a new mortising bit for the through mortising. Triple flute !! Fancy ! I routed the through mortises. Here the setup I left the jig on to finish the mortises. There was a 1/8" off set so I used a setup block as a spacer for my chisel Next up. Through tenons. Cut them at the table saw and fit them with the shoulder plane. Piston fit ! Frame dry fit I just realised I didn't take any pics of how I did the tapers in the legs. I used my tracksaw incase anyone was wondering. If anyone wants to build this just be aware it is silly expensive. Probably as much as the roubo, maybe more. It will be a hair over 2k all said and done with all the clock parts. Also, this thing is huge. You really don't realise untill you get it together just how massive it is. Was with my youngest the other day and tried to get a little work done in the shop with him. Got no work done but got a couple cute pics. You can also get an idea of the scale here. This is where i left off last week. Hopefully get a few hours of work done tomorrow and have an update. Woodenskye
Wow! I wouldn't call the amount of pictures slacking off. I think this is a really cool gift idea, I'm sure your dad will really be moved by this. Hopefully your little guy will own 1 day in the future!

Chet
Really some nice work so far, as usual. This is going to be a really cool gift and the photo album will be a nice plus to the gift. So you going to give him the photo album before the clock and see how far he gets into the album before figures out what it is?
Popular Post Eric.
Good stuff. Are you following the plans to the tee or are you gonna swap out the ply for hardwood panels? The cherry on your bench is looking juicy these days.
mat60
Cool Shane. Looking good all ready. When I saw all the cuts on your hand I was hoping you didnt drill yourself.

I'm always bleeding from somewhere. Could have been a drill, could have been a chisel. shaneymack
No.. Just not a fan of the Oak even QSWO.. Ya me either normally. I've never built anything out of oak. Not that I can remember anyways. Qswo just seems right for his clock. Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk I bought the very same spline jig. Spline jig? So, probably Cherry..
davewyo
Beautiful work, Shane! I don't think I'll ever make a clock, but I'll be interested in how you do it. Putting in the clock hardware(clockworks?) seems like it would be pretty intimidating.
Tpt life
Hey @TIODS, can you hatchet those Tapatalk white spaces? @shaneymack, you don't have to explain every delay. Most of us work more slowly and just thought of you as more human.

Eric.
In the right pieces QSWO can look amazing. This clock definitely. It would look good in walnut, cherry, mahogany, QSWO...but I would love to see that beast in all curly maple with ebony accents. Right @Llama? Although it's definitely a craftsman style so QSWO is the correct choice traditionally.
