Popular Post pkinneb Posted July 8, 2018 Popular Post Report Share Posted July 8, 2018 Well as some of you who followed my jewelry box build may know my next project is the Pekovich Case on Stand I have been looking for the ash lumber for many weeks and since I will be building this in a class at the Marc Adams School starting on the 16th I was starting to get a bit panicked. I needed a wide board that I could cut about 4 1/2' of sap would (no heart wood) off each side to glue up for the case. I had run out of local options and decided to try Bell Forrest since a lot of the lumber for my last few projects had come from them. So I sent them an email with the article from FWW and the page number of the lumber I needed. Well apparently the part about no heartwood got lost in translation and when my wood arrived last evening this is what I received I had also ordered a 8/4 (rift sawn) white oak board for the stand and received a really nice QSWO board....as you can imagine I was pretty much in full panic mode at this point not to mention $275 poorer with no lumber for my project. I went to bed but didn't sleep very well wondering what the heck I was going to do. I wake up this morning with an email from a local sawyer that I had talked to a couple months back on this project but had been advised he didn't have any ash meeting my requirements available. Well apparently he had found a log he had cut up that he thought would meet my needs and sent me a couple pics of the lumber, to say I was ecstatic would be an understatement. Then he says he wants to sell the whole log in one lot and its about 70 bd ft at $4 a bd ft. I'm like crap I'm going to have $600 into this little case on stand project before I even get started but really feeling I have no choice I say will you take $250 cash and he excepts. Well it turns out it was actually closer to 86 bd ft and the best part were these two wide boards which will provide what I need for the case glue ups Not sure what I will do with the other 60 bd ft but I think it may make a nice hanging tool cabinet. I think you will really like yours I sure like mine. I do care about those features. Well the sunroof and the seats but car makers outside of Japan consider anything manual to be base level and will never mix nice features with a manual transmission especially in a pickup. Popular Post pkinneb Posted July 15, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Share Posted July 15, 2018 So to prep for my class I cut and glued up the case panels Then I moved on to cutting out the rough leg blanks, starts with marking out the location on the blank I set up the bandsaw for the first cut. The Carter Magna Fence really shines here Once that is cut I clean it up on the Jointer and then do the second face I head to the table saw for the final two cuts Next up was to sharpen everything in the tool chest Plane shaving porn ahead All packed up and ready to hit the road for the 10 hour drive to Marc Adams. 4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was disappointed in your experience with Bell Forest Products given the direction you gave them. They are my primary source of lumber. Actually now that I have gained some knowledge it was probably as much my ignorance as anything ...but I wish they would have told me what was in the pictures would be hard to find. It was a lot of long days (11-12 hrs per day) for the week but after 54 hours in 5 days we went from this: to this Still have a bit to do like finish shaping the legs and stand parts, final fit of door, finish, and glue up, but what a great week if you ever get the chance to take a class from Mike I highly recommend it. The school is amazing as well. The facilities are top notch with an amazing amount of tools, machines, and space. I will definitely be heading back next year. Over the next couple of days I will go through the pics I took and post some up.
