Do you take it all in one pass or sneak up on it with small cuts? Looking good Dave.

Thanks Steve, i use the micro adjust on the Incra to sneak up on it then run all one side, change the set up and do the other side, its not too bad if you pay attention to what you're doing but still a little scary especially on the first couple of cuts. Steve B Anderson
I don’t have an Incra so I’ll have to rig up something. Thinking about getting one of those digital protractors to set the miter gauge with. I really appreciate you taking the time out of you busy schedule to do this. Looks like everyone is enjoying as much as myself.
legenddc
Would it be easier to use a chamfer router bit instead of adjusting the miter gauge to make sure the end is straight?

You read my mind, they do make a 22 1/2 degree but that I think would work I just haven’t gotten around to buying one yet, great idea
treeslayer
got back in the lamps today after a weekend of working on other woodworking projects. I removed the clamps on the shades and put a rabbit on the inside for the glass and glued the 4 sides together, next was dealing with the top in the center top of the shade, you can see they are at a 30 degree angle
treeslayer
I started with a 4” square piece 3/4 thick, used the dado to put a 1/4” by 5/8” deep groove a 1/4” down from the top then over to the TS and put a 30 degree bevel on the bottom. I started a little big and snuck up on it to get a good fit, works well because I was not taking off any material from the very top and could reference it against the fence
Popular Post treeslayer
next was over to the mortise machine to put in 2 1/4 X 1/4 by 5/8” deep mortise and one in the center 1/4” by 1/2” long in the center, over to the router to remove the material in the center (underneath) at 1/2” depth, several passes and depth adjustments got this done, this will allow light to shine thru and also serve as a vent for the heat

I was just trying to figure out why you would use the table saw over the router bit. I understand not wanting to buy more tools for something you'll rarely use. At least with the Incra miter gauge it's easy to accurately adjust. This build is really crazy. With all the angles I'm pretty sure I'd mess something up! treeslayer
Thanks Mick, lots of set up and too much thinking for my weak mind, the nice part is I’ll be able to have a nice fire with the test pieces to cook some brats and dogs!
wtnhighlander
Nice design feature, venting the top that way!
Popular Post Coop
You mentioned in another thread that you’re not good at journals. I think you’re doing a jam up job on both the project and the process description! 1

treeslayer
Thanks for all the great comments guys, the shades definitely pushed my limits and the plan for the base isn’t much better, took today off to get more QS white oak and finish up a paying job. I hope to make more progress on the shades tomorrow then on to the base, thanks for following, keeps me motivated to stay on the saw
treeslayer
Made a little progress today, got the pieces cut for the skirt on the bottom of the shade, it’s not decorative it adds some height for clearance for the light fixture. cranked the blade over 30 degrees to match the angle on the bottom of the shade and cut the bevel then mitered them at 45 degrees
Popular Post treeslayer
next I put the skirts in the frame clamp to check the fit, looks good to me. The part of the skirt that is not on the same plane as the lamp shade will be hand planed to match the angle of the shade. the plan is to add 2 splines, maybe walnut to the mitered corners of the skirt and after its all glued up cut the skirt in half (horizontal) and add in a band of 1/8” stained glass all around

Popular Post treeslayer
A little progress today, final fit of the top and glued it in place, put walnut splines in the corners, a little strength but mostly looks cool, and glued the shades to the skirt. the skirt won’t be cut for the stained glass until I’m closer to the end, bases start tomorrow
