Popular Post duckkisser
It occurred to me I have never posted my shop so here is where I try not to go crazy. This is my carving/inlay/bench. its short ony two feet by 4 feet used only for smaller work. my view from my bench everything is garage sale/craigslist buys bought router table from a retiring woodworking, all the rest were bought from people moving. This is sharpening bench a must for any turner. my stone are in a cupcake carrier I bought from doller store best investment for storage and water well I ever found. eventuly it is were I will store my metal working equipment like a mini forge to take out to driveway and a welder. soder ect…. assembly/finishing/glue up/junk table right now I have a couple of projects im in the middle of working on including a table that I want to cut silhouettes of fish on the legs and reshape the legs and brace. It has a flip top to double the surface that I want to take off and mount to the wall above the table. I then want to carve that surface into a rippling water surface with a fish under the water. by the time im done it will look like a entirely different table. best part is cost me 10 bucks to redo it and Im hoping to resell for a small fortune. my sexy sexy lathe will always have this in any shop I own. with this I can have a shed and still make stuff. my miter saw with its useless dust hood that someday I will redo and make work. everyone should have one of these I like to call this my catch all that I have to move everytime I need to cut a board um ya the rest of my stuff when I bought the house there was a covered porch so I put in wall and enclosed it. now I store some of my wood dust collector and air compressor so that when there running a barely can hear them.
treeslayer
looks like you've reached maximum capacity @duckkisser, well almost, i always like to see other shops to give me ideas, maybe a ceiling in there and some LED lights is about all i would add, and i have one of those heaters in my shop (garage) works great for those cold Iowa winters. Popular Post duckkisser
the ceiling is so low that in order to have lights I have to have it above the beams so if I put in ceiling I would be hiting my head on lights and I dont want to buy lights when I had a bunch of cheap shop lights already. plus I need the space above to put ladder ect…. ill stick to the florescent since I have them already. maybe if I ever move. I do need to insulate the roof and garage door for winter/ summer. as for max capacity I want to build a flip top cart so drum sander and planer can share a slot. I someday want to put in a cnc router/ maybe where the grinders are and then move grinders to scroll saw area...…..oh damn now I need to move my shop around again. 3
blackoak
how do you like the Jet 10/20 drum sander ? I think it might work for me , but wondered how others felt .
duckkisser
It’s ok I like the open end and small footprint but changing paper sucks wish it was easier. I bought mistly for segment turning and for figured wood
Coop
Duck, great looking setup. Pic #6 shows a dc bag that looks like it was never used. Do you have two dc systems? I agree on the scroll saw. Most under used tool in my shop that has a foot print of a large dinosaur.
duckkisser
yes I do have two machines one dedicated to the lathe/miter saw but it does nothing for the miter saw. I go it and hung it last fall before it got cold and never used it except to make sure it works. hopfully as soon as I feel the bug to turn ill be on my lathe. was thinking to put it inside the cabinet but I said the hell with it. Chet
I agree, you have a lot packed in there. Do I see a bunch of hardwood flooring scraps on your lumber rack.
Popular Post gee-dub
Looks like the kind of space you can walk into with a cup of coffee and just feel the stress just running out of you. There are times I just walk out into the shop and look around. It sort of resets my aggravation-tolerance level

duckkisser
anyone have any idea how I can put in a cnc router without removing tools? creative solutions will be given extra points if they are feasible. so no suggesting I invent a shrink/embiggen ray or any other ridicules suggestions. Chet
I think CNC needs to be pretty level so using a mobile base might be out on that. Can you make a number of flip carts for some of your other tools to make room?
wtnhighlander
If you had ceiling height, there are lift systems that let you hoist it up for storage, down for use. But you said the ceiling was low, didn't you?
Chestnut
Dig a basment under your shop? Buy lottery tickets? I think it'd be interesting to have a small CNC but sacrificing the space for it would be difficult. I do woodworking to stop myself from sitting behind a screen all day long so a CNC would be counter intuitive. The inlay capabilities though would be limitless.
Mark J
I think a CNC router is a very useful tool, but it's difficult to site. Especially when you figure typical sizes for plywood (4x4, 5x5). You'd want a big bed and with walk around pretty soon you need more space than a cabinet table saw with outfeed table. There is a makers space in Downers Grove with a big CNC that I've used, but that's a 2 or 3 hour drive from where you live. You might look for a makers space or something similar with a CNC for rent, maybe in the Champaign area.
duckkisser
i want to get a x-carve something that i can program in a repeating program and batch out similar projects. was thinking of making these. or some kind of sighns, but i would love to have it to cut out inlays make perfect looking projects. these are just cut vinyl but if i can nock out like 20 of each then i can sell them for 5 bucks at a craft show and pay off the table space. people like to buy 5 dollar projects and use them as gifts were as they wont buy a 5 thousand dollar table and chairs. honestly if i was going to get a cnc i think that i might end up getting rid of some of the storage in my side room and building a table to put it on in there. i would just have to thin out my lumber and get rid of shelf full of random off cuts. duckkisser
that is the idea going to spend the summer making cutting boards and inlaying/ carving handles. and then try and sell them at a sale for christmas
VizslaDad
First, I think your shop is fantastic. There's a lot of stuff in there, but it certainly looks well laid out for actually getting work accomplished. Next, I've seen a number of folks build flip up/down CNC tables. Here are some examples: https://www.instructables.com/id/Flip-Top-CNC-Table/ (this could do double duty as a cart for a lunchbox planer or something similarly sized if the whole thing were scaled down somewhat...he has a not-small CNC) Fancy + basic examples in one thread: https://discuss.inventables.com/t/my-x-carve-folding-table/13989 Basic, smaller footprint:
Chip Sawdust
Wow Duck that looks real nice. Looks like a great space. Now, I’m curious about the scroll saw thing. You said “everyone should have one of these” and you do inlays so I figured yeah, of course you do. Then Coop said he agrees with you on the scroll saw. Sorry for sounding dense, but was your comment sarcastic? Tbh I’ve been looking at scroll saws but can’t quite pull the trigger on the one I want (DeWalt’s offering). I love my scroll saw it is like having a bandsaw with thin blade but I can cut at sharp angles and I can pop it loose and cut out insides if a object. But it’s more useful for small details project then for doing furniture. If I every have to move into small space I’m taking lathe, scroll saw bandsaw and my work bench everything else could go. 1
