drzaius
You won't need much. I clean my filter every year or so & empty the little catch bin at the same time. Very little collects there.
BillyJack
I wish it was worth organizing my shop. But I need to eliminate more than organize. Glad your getting it's value....
Robby W
The getting rid of is part of the next step of reorganizing. Some of it will be easy, some will be harder. I have quite a bit of stuff from my father's shop, much of which are duplicates of what I already have. Getting rid of those things will be a bit harder.
BillyJack
Mines mainly lumber. Had a lot of projects to use a lot of it up on but my lack of woodworking interest has paused that... when a commercial shop I worked for retired he Gave me all the lumber. I should have declined... Everyone one thinks more is better, it's a nightmare. ... I'm looking for a jon boat and trailer to rework this winter. If that happens I'll need the space. Meaning I'll have to part with the lumber. I offered this on letgo one time and everyone declined. Said they didn't want scraps. Scraps are in top the 8/4 mahogany, walnut board 8+ feet are on the bottom... stupid people won't come and look....

Possibly compare all duplicates and choose the best one. If they are equal keep your fathers tools. Just an idea...
Robby W
The tools are the easy part. The memories going to be harder. Part of them are things like the records from my Boy Scout Troop. The Troop no longer exists, so I don't really know what to do with them. Bunch of stuff like that.

wtnhighlander
I have several of my Grand-dad's tools, but most of them are so worn out that they are little more than sentimental nick-nacks. Grand-dad believed that tools were for working, not saving.

Popular Post Robby W
So I decided to finally replace the dust collection adapter on my Grizzly G0586 jointer. The plastic thing that came on it doesn't funnel the shavings correctly and J's up the dust chute. Plus it cracked while cleaning it out. Enough is enough. I grabbed a Big Gulp dust good I had laying around and, after a bit of measuring, cut it down to size. I made a plywood frame for it and went to bolt it on. Dang. The bolts are too short. Since it is from Taiwan, everything is metric, fo I grabbed an original bolt and headed down the the big orange store. The bolt didn't fit in there sizer. Seemed like it was 6mm x. 1.25, but they didn't have any. Wait, that doesn't seem right. Wouldn't you know it, it was actually a 1/4x20 bolt. I only have a few hundred of those on my shelves. Back home, grab a few 1 inch bolts and it tightened right up. 1
Popular Post Robby W
It's been awhile since I was able to work on my shop. This last weekend my oldest son and his son helped me with the rearrangement of my shop. A clamp rack was removed from the wall (I made a new one, shown earlier in this thread). My lathe was out on dollies and moved out of the way. The power tool case and the mechanic's chest were moved in to resulting hole. I was tighter than I thought it was going to be. I moved all of my stationary tools to their new positions in a tool island and my shop lost its gloomyness. The big issue was that I found out I had a lot of little hidey holes where I stashed things that I don't have now. Looks like I am going to have to do a lot of weeding out of stuff. Oh, joy.

Robby, that’s a rough row to hoe! We are in the middle of adding on to our house and in doing so, our existing closet and bathroom will become part of our bedroom. This means moving all of our clothes to another bedroom closet. A perfect time to get rid of clothes that I grew out of. I ended up only throwing out one shirt, and it was folded and in a drawer. I feel certain I will get back into the other shirts some day! When hell freezes over my wife told me.
Popular Post Robby W
@Coop - I don't know about others, but I quit outgrowing things vertically. It's the horizontal dimensions that get bigger.

Popular Post Robby W
It has been awhile since I have been able to update this post. I have accomplished several things, not all related to the shop. There is a bathroom with a tub/shower above my shop. My youngest son moved back in for awhile. I don't mind him moving in. He is quiet, helps around the house and pays a good amount in rent. The tub in his bathroom caused a leak into the shop below. We investigated and found a couple of things. The biggest was that there was a gap between the tile backsplash, the tub and the glass enclosure that the water was funneling water down and into the shop. We dug all of the old grout and caulking out and packed it full with fresh, good quality caulk and that seems to have solved the issue for now. We also found a gap between the wall and the floor that you could stick your hand through. Had to fix that too. And, to top things off, as my son was replacing the glass door in it tracks, it exploded in his hands.... literally exploded. It was made of tempered glass and I guess it decided it didn't want to exist anymore. We swept up glass from 25 feet away. Luckily, my son wears glasses, so he didn't suffer anything more than a couple of tiny cuts. The look on his face when it happened as priceless. One minute, he is holding the glass and the next his hands are holding air. He had the most bewildered look on his face. Scared the hell out of the cat too! So we got the shop ceiling patched up and my lumber rack reinstalled. While I was at it, I added the necessary electrical to hang some additional ceiling lights, which I have started to install. Plus started the weeding out process, so I have more room in the shop. Tossed out a bunch of scraps and clutter. One dust collection project I have had in mind for awhile was to replace the main duct elbows with PVC electrical conduit elbows where possible. My ducts are 4" schedule 40 ABS drain pipe. The elbows are fairly tight. They worked ok all these years, but I was curious to see if they would improve things. The conduit elbows are 16" radius vs maybe 5" radius and much smoother. I replaced one of elbows in one of the main branch lines. Here is what the original elbow next to the conduit elbow looks like: Lots smoother. After cutting the old elbow out and replacing it, the duct piece looks like this: It seems to flow better, so I am happy with this change. I still have to dig the one in the back of my tablesaw out and replace it. That is going to be fun because it runs around my 80 gallon air compressor that is bolted to the floor. Then I will extend the duct shown here to the new tool island, add electrical, and I can get back to woodworking. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and I don't think it is a locomotive.

Chet
I hate plumbing, I will do it if needed but I hate it. 5 hours ago, Robby W said: And, to top things off, as my son was replacing the glass door in it tracks, it exploded in his hands... This is the second time I have heard of this. My brother in law was re-hanging their master bath shower door. As he was lifting it he barely bumped the track over head and the door instantly shattered. He was extremely lucky because in my opinion he was being extremely stupid in doing something like this in his flip flops.
Tpt life
I shattered a pane setting a window on Saturday, but that was my own stupidity as I am out of practice. I supported it improperly as I mulled a set of windows into a single unit. The glass was a $300 mistake, but it was only one of a dual pane assembly, so I installed it while I had help. That means my mistake is on display until the replacement arrives. 1
Robby W
The glass people said that any hip on the edge will cause tempered glass to blow. @Chet Funny, my son was in flip flops too Must be a thing.
