Popular Post Chestnut Posted August 29, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted August 29, 2021 What's on your bench that is worth sharing but isn't thread worthy? I made a light weight shelf. I'm going to raise and lower it in my garage with pullys 6 Quote
Coop Posted August 29, 2021 Report Posted August 29, 2021 That’s sweet. What will it support? Hopefully you posted in the right category! 1 Quote
Chestnut Posted August 29, 2021 Author Report Posted August 29, 2021 Christmas tree / decorations, and random totes that are a bit to large for shelves. Lowering it to the floor will make it easier to load or shift things around. Quote
wtnhighlander Posted August 29, 2021 Report Posted August 29, 2021 Rope, or cable? I have a bike hanging from a length of clothesline in my garage. Been there about a decade. I fully expect it to fall on my head every time I walk under it. Quote

Been there about a decade. I fully expect it to fall on my head every time I walk under it. Using 5/16 or 3/8 nylon rope its rated for 200 lbs safe working load. I'll have it rigged with a 2:1 pulley system. I figured it'd put the shelf capacity at 400 lbs. I doubt it'll have more than 200 though. So at that math each stand of rope would only have 25 lbs of tension. 1 Quote
Popular Post Chestnut Posted August 30, 2021 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 30, 2021 Quickly made another fishing rod holder for a friend. We've been fishing a lot and off handed mentioned his rod storage stinks. Made from fence picket scraps from my wood storage project. I've made 2 similar holders. I've never found a point in a support above the reel. The angled bottom locks the rod in quite nice. 4 Quote
Tom King Posted August 30, 2021 Report Posted August 30, 2021 Sailboat line lasts for decades, and doesn't stretch much. I keep a spool of Marlow 5/32 prestretch on hand for any unusual use that comes up. 1 1 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted September 3, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted September 3, 2021 It’s been a couple of weeks since I made it but I don’t think I ever posted my bench. Got tired of having the top on sawhorses temporarily for the last few years. Bought the Record vise last year when I was picking something up I bought on eBay. Still need to put a board on the front and make saw wood jaws for the vise but it works. My 4 year old “helped” me make this. Also finished up this picture frame for my sister’s wedding shower last week. 9 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 Lovely piece of artwork! And the picture is nice, too. 2 Quote
Coop Posted September 4, 2021 Report Posted September 4, 2021 Nice tight joints on the pic frame! What kind of wood? What’s the story behind the pic? Did your sister paint in? Quote

Did your sister paint in? Thank you. I tested it a lot before I did it on the actual wood. I enjoy making frames so I might make a dedicated sled. It's maple with some color in it. The back side was plainer but somehow one of those miters seemed off it became the back. My wife said plain mitered frame with light wood. Picture is a painting we saw on our annual family vacation. They just bought a house and need some artwork. My Aunt and Uncle were in town for the shower and he saw the spurtle I made for Mother's Day and wants one now. Quote

Your going to tumble down a rabbit hole.... I also like the frame and picture. I like the character that the heartwood of maple provides. It can be very pretty despite not being "popular" maple with sap wood can be pretty affordable as well. Quote

Need to get started on my next big project to generate some more scraps. I need to tune up my bandsaw some and/or get a new belt to make the sanding go quicker. I really like the frame. Still have more wood leftover so I might make another one for myself. 1 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted October 2, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted October 2, 2021 Technically it’s not in the bench yet, but will be soon. Think it’ll cover the rest of my projects for the year. 8 Quote
Popular Post JohnG Posted October 2, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted October 2, 2021 Quick shelf to replace the awful wire shelf in our laundry room. The shelf is primarily used for holding our kids’ craft supplies and the wire shelf is on the verge of falling on someone. Maple ply with solid maple edging. I will also have solid maple under the entire length of the back and sides to support it, with two 45* supports (also maple) toward the middle. 74” wide and 16” deep. Finished with shellac spray for speed. 8 Quote
Popular Post Immortan D Posted October 3, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted October 3, 2021 Right now my wrenches are on my bench. I spent a good part of the weekend cleaning them and painting the engravings to improve visibility. 9 Quote
Popular Post JohnG Posted October 3, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted October 3, 2021 Shelf completed and installed. The excessive amount of holes from the wire shelf are from the prior owner. I won’t take credit for that! Just need to put plugs in to hide the screws. 7 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted October 3, 2021 Report Posted October 3, 2021 John, how did you fasten the diagonals into the shelf? Quote
JohnG Posted October 3, 2021 Report Posted October 3, 2021 I thought about putting a dowel into it or using a domino, but those required a little too much measuring and planning for the timeline I had for the project. In the end, I just used a decent sized screw through the top and down into the support. I held the support in place and traced around where it contacts the top, drilled a pilot hole up from the bottom, then chamfered the top and drove the screws. Before I attached the supports I tested it by putting a lot of my weight on the center of the shelf and there was little sag. With the shelf screwed into the ledger strips all the way around and the 1.5” maple edging, it’s pretty rigid. The supports may help with the long term life of it. 1 Quote

I just picked up a SK 1/4" socket drive screwdriver from Habitat for Humanity for $.50. Wish they had more SK stuff. 1 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted October 11, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted October 11, 2021 Buried under all this wood is a workbench and a tablesaw. Had to move everything out of the living area of the basement before a kid got hurt. New lumber racks come tomorrow and once I can pop by Home Depot to buy some screws I can get everything I'm not going to use for the new TV stand up and out of the way. Hoping to start on that the weekend of the 23rd. The case alone should clear out a bunch of boards. Will be tossing some scraps as I put it all back too. 3 Quote
Popular Post legenddc Posted October 23, 2021 Popular Post Report Posted October 23, 2021 Forgot to post this last weekend. Hung the shelves and got the lumber up and shop operational again. Now to finally start on that sideboard. 6 Quote
