Did a quick dry fit. then cut the taper on the legs, and cleaned them up with my bevel up smoother. After that I cut the arch in the rails of the base, Cleaned them up with the oscillating spindle sander and finished by hand with a block and sand paper. Then added the chamfer to all of the base pieces. Then glued and clamped them up. This is the top and... The edge detail on the top. Base plus one, plus two, And three. Just a few things to clean up, double check all of the sanding and then start applying the finish. I only quoted this to drop it on the new page.. Looks amazing Chet! Great work on the base!

davewyo
Really well done, Chet! It seems like it came together really quickly. Probably not as much as you...but I too am looking forward to the "pop" when the finish goes on.

Popular Post Chet
In finishing up the bookcase I drilled the holes to attach the top to the top section. I drilled three holes toward the front of the case and three holes in the back. The three holes in the back I elongated to allow for wood movement of the top itself. As far as the finish goes with the help of Mike ( estesbubba) and after doing some testing, I tried something different. I used a 2# cut of garnet shellac that was diluted about 25% more with denatured alcohol. I sprayed one coat then sanded with 400 grit to knock the grain down then sprayed 3 coats of General Finish's High Performance, light sanding with 400 grit between coats. We didn't want to to go with just clear glass for the doors, We wanted something that had the waviness that you see in older glass. Anyway here it is. Couple of pictures of the top. Final resting spot. This is for Steve.

When you put books on the shelves you have no trouble reading titles. We took a number of books to the glass shop to test before we ordered the glass. We haven't put any in the case yet, I wanted to get a cure on the finish, but when we do I will try to get a decent photo with out flash glare. Makes sense, that would have been my guess that you did check beforehand on the glass, At first I thought it was some very wild figured wood as the first picture drew my attention before reading!
