Gonna edge the ply, then install slides... then, cut the fronts and inlay the tree thing. I'm sure I missed something? What will the front be made of? I think it's beau-ti- full so far! Popular Post Llama
Not sure why I haven't updated this... I sure miss Tapatalk! Started by drawing the tree onto a piece of cardboard cut to the same size as the front. I made some changes, but for the most part it's the same. Yada yada yada.... inlay is done. This piece is a wider and taller than the actual front by about an inch in both directions. This is to ensure proper spacing. My youngest son Aedan wanted to learn how the inlays were made, so I taught him how My practice a week ago, and his on the left.

Templates - Drew out the shape on cardboard, cut that our to trace on 1/4" MDF, made sure to add on some "feet" for overlap, plunged in the 1/4" MDF to route out the inside shape. Inlay - used the white side inlay set. I routed the inlay pieces first, drew those onto the maple ply to ensure proper layout. I numbered each piece, and included little hash marks. I routed the maple ply ensuring I had enough room so I could sand flush. Also allowing proper overlap of the design. There was a sequence of 7 steps to get all the branches inlayed. That's about it... actually pretty straightforward.
Popular Post wdwerker
Lookin good Mel ! Every time I do an inlay I read up to refresh my memory, practice on scrap to get the routers and my head adjusted, then and only then do I tackle cuts on the good wood. This is a wise practice with any skill you do infrequently.
