Popular Post Just Bob
I have been using a store bought marking knife that I really hate, it's fat, ugly, and well, ugly. I was looking at buying a nice knife, or set, and I landed on @derekcohen web site: http://inthewoodshop.com/, where he has an excellent tutorial on making a marking knife. If you haven't checked out his site, you should, it is now in my favorites. Using his tutorial, I made a couple of knives, and by mistake showed them to my wife. She looked at them picked them up and used one, and asked (I am serious here) "can you do something like this for my porcupine quill?" Without missing a beat I said "sure you catch em, and pluck em, I will figure something out". She flipped me off and said "I am serious" and walked off. I muttered "so am I". She's a quilter, and apparently they use quills to push multiple layers of material thru a sewing machine, who knew. A little research and I found quills break, and they (quilters) buy a lot of them. So I made a "quill" using a brass rod, and put in a handle. I gave the quill to her about a week ago, and today she said she really liked it and asked "how hard was this to make", without thinking I said "not too hard", she said "good, I need a few more". What's a few? 50 by Christmas. Teach me to be a smartass. Top to bottom, teak, purple heart, sapele, finish is shellac and paste wax. Thanks Derek, I think.
Brendon_t
Um yeah... I think you are good spirited about it.. but being ordered to what I will make in my shop with my very little time wouldn't go over so well. I'd show my wife where the lathe is and tell her to have a ball.

TerryMcK
You learn something everyday. You'll have to setup a production line ("any color you want as long as it's black" - shellac and paste wax in your case). Great looking knives/quills.

Immortan D
They look great, Bob! I will be following your steps. For my own reference, this is the exact link for Derek's tutorial: http://inthewoodshop.com/ShopMadeTools/A Knife for Marking Dovetails.html

You're welcome to it. Thanks for the offer Kev! But now that I have the lathe, my scrap pile has been growing bigger, and my burn pile smaller, I really need to get a this pile reduced.
ClassAct
I think you should burn "Donations Accepted" and your URL into the handle of the so-called freebies. Generosity is great but poverty sucks. Got to strike a balance.
Popular Post Ronn W
It is great when you can use your hobby to help her in her hobby. I made my wife a quilt rack. She made me a very nice shop apron and is happy to help when I need a couple of extra hands in shop during glue ups or such.

Do you need to be reminded of the horror stories you've told of how your wife whips you into submission?
wdwerker
The trick to making multiples is getting organized and carefully executing each step in a fairly uniform manner. You can turn the handles all the same or each one differently as long as the part that accepts the "quill " is uniform. When you batch cut parts setting a stop and checking the result before cutting a bunch of parts is important.
