FWIW I built a piece that had a curved cover like that IIRC i used contact cement and glued canvas from a fabric shop to the back side It has never cracked. Thanks Paul! I appreciate your opinion. Are you saying that the canvas helps to get a tight radius during bending? I'm familiar with using canvas to back a tambuor type door (or such) so that the door has flexibility, but I can't get my head around why applying a canvas backer to thin veneer helps bending without cracking. I cut out a support for routing and used double-stick tape to apply my support and work piece to a piece of melamine. I also cut out some templates for my pattern. http:// I cut out my pattern with a 3/16ths straight bit on the router, and got closer to the lines after the photo with a 1/16" bit. http:// I kept refining the recess until it fit my template. http:// I traced out the pattern and roughly routed out the fretwork. http:// Then I took down front of the face of the pediment to the next level. http:// Here's a funky ice formation that built up on the hub of my pick-up last winter. http://

I just looked back and you started this a little over a year ago. Have you hit the 500 hour mark yet? Probably not. I took so much time off from the project during the last four months that I'm not adding on very many hours lately. I had hoped to get the Thing complete this summer, but it looks like I'm pushing into the autumn months.
Chet
I don't mean to jump to the end of the book, but have you decided what finish you are going to use.

I am probably spraying the Thing with shellac. I already did the doors with a seal coat and they look pretty good.

Thanks, John! I really appreciated your input on this. That first pediment was only an inch or so taller, but it was dramatically over-sized and was going to make the Thing even more top heavy that it was already going to be. Now it'll still be a little too chunky on top but it will be considerably better. I'm not 100% sure this is going to be the final iteration of the pediment. It's going pretty well but it has its issues. I'm attempting to use solid wood where I couldn't get the radius I needed by steam bending, then use steam bending in the gentler curves. We'll see if works out...
Denette
Looking awesome! The real question is how much this Thing would cost if you charged per hour, hahaha!

So, let's do the math...umm...(mumble, mumble) hours, times umm let's say (mumble, mumble) dollars per hour, add in consumables yada, yada...carry the two AND...um...sorry, you can't afford it. Nobody can afford it! Nobody in their right mind anyway. Hmmm, I'm thinking I may have to revisit my business plan...
Chet
When you add up the hours don't forget to add in the hours you were out on the water or in the wood with your wife hunting tin cans with your pistola.

davewyo
Pieces for the latch of the "secret" compartment (really a tray, and not so secret I suppose). http:// Put the spring-a-ma-thing into the the receptacle, http:// press in the whatcha-ma-call-it, and put in the pin. http:// Then it'll look like this (with a few tweaks). http://
Popular Post davewyo
I cut up some stock to size for the hidden tray. I also made a few extra pieces in case of error. I'm not sure if I'll bust off a couple little pins-'n-tails working with tiny drawers. http:// I cut all the tails. http:// Transferred and cut the pins for the through DTs. I used a David Barron DT alignment board for the first time. I think it helped to position these glorified tongue depressors when I transfered my lines with an exact-o knife. http:// Then the half blinds. http:// It fits in pretty good so although there are some gaps in my DTs I'm going with this if still fits tight when I'm through putting in a bottom in, gluing it together, and cleaning it up. http://
