Popular Post davewyo
I drilled the drawer fronts for the hardware. I may replace the brass with little ebony buttons in the future, but that's what we have for now. http:// Then I glued up the base and I'm working on the moulding which will go between the base and the case. http:// Apropos of nothing... here's the painting on which I based the carving of the case sides. Apparently I did the watercolor in 2003. It's not terrific, but it made a good pattern for a simple carving. http://

davewyo
I glued on the front part of the moulding that will be between the case and the base. The side moulding isn't attached yet. It will get glued for the front few inches and then screwed toward the back of the case to allow the sides to expand. http:// http://
Popular Post wdwerker
I keep seeing the " skills building exercise " quote at the beginning of this journal . Somewhere over the last year or so it has morphed into a showcase for some incredible talent ! Thanks, Steve! Coming from you, that's high praise indeed. Each little step along the way has challenged me. There are numerous flaws in the carving which will become apparent with the finish going on, but I am striving to get the construction right so that expansion/contraction issues have been taken into account. Although the parts of the Thing are thin and small, and the wood movement is likely to be limited, I've done most of the things that would be done on a full sized china closet or high boy. If it moves, I'm hoping the doors and drawers don't bind up, or the miters blow out.
wdwerker
At the scale you are working with I have seen some glaring errors that were many decades old and never caused problems. But at full scale they would be quite destructive. It's wise to follow safe practices but I see no need to be obsessive about the little issues.

I've got wood grain going in every which direction. I mostly concentrated on the movement which will occur with the sides. Each drawer blade is only glued up front in its dado and the mouldings at the pediment and the base will be glued up front and screwed at the back. So all the wood movement from the sides will be directed toward the back of the piece.

I have a very short list of "things to do" as far as the construction goes. I had to go back to Eric.'s post to see what it was I said I still have to do a month or two ago to make sure I wasn't missing something. As it stands, I have two things to do on the list. The finial, and the back boards. Then I can go onto spraying some shellac. Woo Hoo!
davewyo
Oh! I should add that I cut the miters on the little tiny cove moulding with an Xacto micro saw and miter box. It worked well for the application.
