legenddc
Can't wait to see them finished with leather. I remember seeing that it can be quite expensive. How much floor space does one of these take up with the footstool?

It's difficult to know what to choose here. Hence the question about what type to go with. Makes sense. I know very little about leather, as it doesn't go well in hot climate homes with no AC Good luck.
Chestnut
So i have some movement this past week. I finally got the leather from the distributor, called the guy doing the upholstery and he's going to be on vacation starting Thursday this week for a week but wants me to drop everything off. I was somewhat leery on the leather and it took a lot of research to decide. I finally decide on a full aniline leather. It seemed the the full aniline leathers are sort of like an oil finish on wood. Keep the maintained and they stay beautiful forever, and finish repairs are easy. Protected leathers have a finish sort of like poly that is durable but when damaged can be more difficult to fix. Don't ask it cost WAY too much. That actually seems reasonable for what you will have when complete.

Well you should have some extra leather for the next small project then I still think for a two heirloom pieces that is not really that bad. I'm not unhappy with the cost (i haven't seen the finished product yet), i had a rough range of what to expect for the cost and it defiantly hit the top end of that range. I'll disclose the whole cost after it's done and i can share pictures. Beings that the work isn't done yet I'm not sure if I'm aiming at a moving target or not still.

I think based on the great job you did on the woodworking side the extra cost for the premium upholstery is well deserved. They will look amazing.
Popular Post Chet
There is actually a lot of this in wood working, maybe not to this extent but it is there. When you go to this kind trouble in making a nice piece, some times you just need t spring for the Brusso hinges or the Blum drawer glides or in my most recent experience in Arts and Crafts style, two sets of hinges and two door pulls in oil rubbed brass finish, total cost... $$$. But it is worth it. You don't want to get close to the finish line, then trip and fall on your face.
Popular Post Chestnut
For all intents and purposes the chairs are complete. I have a few finish touch ups to do and i have to finalize the pegs. That work will be completed when i run out of things to do, so maybe in 2020. The upholstery was done by Harrian Upholstry and i think he nailed it. The leather is a pure aniline leather i got from a local supply. I don't know that the picture do the chairs justice. After the pictures i left them outside on my deck to sun tan a bit. They got some good color in 3 hours and then fearing rain i brought them back inside. 4 Hides cost me $1,100 Upholstery costs were $1,500 Lumber was around $500 It was more than i was expecting but I'm happy with the cost and the out come was worth it. I wanted to see the outcome before i shared the price.
pkinneb
They turned out amazing Drew!! $3,100, while it is a lot of money I feel its cheap for two heirloom chair sets that will stay in your family for generations to come. Great pics too. BTW after I make mine I may have to come over and check out the upholstery. I plan on doing my own and I really like how yours turned out. Cheeset202
Excellent job Nut, they came out beautiful, I would spend the same thing on the leather, one time cost but you will be able to leave those chairs to your grandchildren! Gotta have kids first though!

wdwerker
I love the rich slightly mottled look of that leather. A single color leather just doesn't look natural. 4 hides ? Was there any useful scraps left ?
