Popular Post pkinneb
Thanks guys!! Getting close now First up today was to pull the first door out of the vacuum bag and see what we had. Other then a small crack from too much over hang on the back of the door (you can see how its bent on the left side of the pic on the back edge) it looked pretty good. Not totally happy with the book match seem but not terrible either. The front corner match turned out much better. The form will need to be repaired before door two It was made for clamps and not a vacuum bag... Form repaired and cut down, door two in the bag! Here are some pics of the first door after some quick clean up ...and a back shot And a quick repair of a chip out I had while planing the front veneer even to the door Next up I started milling stock for the various drawer dividers. First time using the new BOW Products Guide Pro it worked well and quick to set just a pivot pin in the miter slot. Then I used the drum sander to bring them down to an 1/8" thick Cut them to length with a miter gauge Then ganged them together with tape to cut the slots using the TS and a flat bottom blade Here they are prior to final clean up. I will add cloth bottoms to the drawers that these will sit on Next up I will finish up the other two drawer dividers, one for rings and one for longer items. Then I will pull the other door out of the bag clean it up and fit and glue the hinge bars to the doors.

I got like a preproduction offer but they are generally available now I think. I have an extension that will take it up another three inches or so as well. This was my first time using it and I thought it worked very well and quick to reset.
pkinneb
Only got 90 minutes in the shop tonight but I was able to get the second door out of the vacuum bag and cleaned up. Fit and glued the hinge bars to the doors Finished the last two drawer organizers. This one is the box for the ring section now I need to wait for the material, pad, and backer board to finish the drawers out. I will do that while I am waiting for the finish to dry. Blue tape for clamps Next up mount the doors and make the last wood item, the necklace bars for the doors. Then on to final finish prep and finish...I really need to decide wait that's going to be
wdwerker
Waterbourne finishes won't yellow that beautiful veneer. Superblonde shellac might be nice, but perfume spills might hurt the finish.
drzaius
If I get a vote, I think an oil finish would look great on the wenge with a clear waterbourne finish on the veneer. Great job on this.
Chet
I fell behind on following this but some real nice work as always Paul. With the fact that you put veneer over the magnets, you could have skipped gluing them in, correct? I know it was no real extra effort though.

You are correct but I was concerned if they fell out during glue up, and I didn't notice it, I would be kicking myself so a little super glue insurance for the guy with bad eyes was in order
drzaius
Veneer over the magnets is a very nice touch, both visually and that it provides a softer close than direct magnet to steel.

That was my thought as well. The other side is not hidden but it is not as obvious as it is on the door edge. 7 hours ago, Belle City WW said: That piece is awesome! great work!!! john Thanks John! Tonight I knocked out the hinge mortises. First I clamped the doors to the case with spacers top and bottom for alignment Then grabbed some marking tools Laid them out Then roughed them out with a router Cleaned them up with a chisel ...not perfect but hey I have 7 more to get it right. You can see the board I clamped here to help steady the router Then I did the back same process but used the vise this time there that's better Now I need to get some metal screws to cut the threads in prior to installing the brass screws. Next up I milled some stock for the necklace bars that will hang on the doors. Then ran a 1/8" cove on each side at the router table I cleaned them up with a hand profile sander Then drilled the pin holes before calling it a night Tomorrow night I will fit them to the doors and glue them in, at that point the wood construction will be complete and the finish process will begin. Thanks for following along!! This one is almost a wrap

Mick S
Just fantastic work, Paul. I have to admit not following this build since I wasn't that interested in building a jewelry box. That said, the techniques and approaches you've used are applicable to the improvement of any project. Now I'm kicking myself for not following along. Great journal!
wdwerker
Since it's a late present you could slip a gift wrapped piece of jewelry in one of the compartments. That would add a nice surprise.

I started watching him about 3 years ago now. Watching his videos introduced me into handtool woodworking and really changed the craft and my approach to it. I still use his DT saw, chisels, and several of his processes like sharpening and cutting DT's. Unfortunately after about a year of his paid subscription I stopped watching just to much downtime in his video's to keep my attention. I will be forever grateful to him for teaching me via video to use a plane, sharpen hand tools, and cut dovetails! 1 hour ago, Mick S said: Just fantastic work, Paul. wdwerker
Etsy, Overstock, Gems Tv...plenty of places to get nice but reasonably priced jewelry. Never had a lady react badly to any piece of jewelry. Usually the reactions are very pleasant !

Popular Post pkinneb
Well after preparing a few samples the boss choose the semi gloss lacquer (sprayed.) So I got the parts prepped and into the finish room they went. I started with the drawers and dividers. Since the drawer fronts are booked matched I added numbers to the bottoms Those are ready so I moved them out to work on the cloth bottoms Then the case and doors went into the finish room Then I started on the drawer bottoms pretty straight forward some backer board, cloth, padding, and fabric glue. I cut the fabric squares and pad first. Then laid them out and started to glue them down corners first Then I cut some of the cloth out of the corners and glued the sides down That's it easy peasy. Then put them in and use a ruler to clean up the corners if any cloth is sticking out Then I moved on to the ring tray. First I rolled up some strips of padding and glued the edge so they don't unroll Then I glued the 9 rolls to the backer board...at which point I ran out of glue so I will have to finish this tomorrow night ...but the other 5 drawers are done Sneak peak of the finish Next up should be the last post for this project - finish the ring drawer, epoxy the necklace hooks in, install the doors, wax the runners, and take some beauty shots.

From start to finish shows your command of the craft, be very proud of your work and take a couple of days off and have an adult beverage. Chet
It was some really nice work through out the whole project and it came out absolutely superb. Well done Paul. I really like the design and wood choices, just the right amount of contrast. ...and its only the first week in July. Just missed the goal date but a smidge.
