Popular Post pkinneb
Started picking stock for a jewelry box build I'm starting. this will be a combination of Marc's guild build and one from Vol33/No 197 of Woodsmith. I will be using Wenge for the top, bottom, accents, and curly maple for the drawer fronts and and sides. Should be able to get some nice curl out of this board. I think I will go to the lumber yard and get a plain maple board for the inside pieces as well as the drawer parts so I don't over do the piece with too much figure.

Coop
Count me in as well. Neat choice of wood, I think? I’ve never worked with Wenge. Does anyone have a pic of it with a finish on it? I bet I could google it but a home grown pic from here would look better.
RichardA
As I recall, Wenge is splintery, That may be why I haven't used it for many years. I just might be a woose.

..Kev
It is a bit "splintery" and I tend to wear gloves when working with it until it's well sanded. It takes finish well and should look awesome in your project!

Kurt Triebe
Nice wood combo... I'm still thinking through what I'm going to use for my jewelry box builds, too. Will be very curious to see how yours turns out! My project keeps getting pushed back- wife wants me to finish some furniture before I get to smaller projects like this. She claims my girls (5 and 3) won't appreciate it anyway right now, so there's no point to do them until they're a bit older...
Popular Post pkinneb
Only got an hour in the shop today but I did start making some layout choices. I kind of hate to use the Wenge board like this (due to waste) but I really want to keep the grain on the top and visible portion on the bottom is straight grained as I can. I need about 9" and the board is about 8 ish so a glue up would be required regardless. So in this pick the bottom will be made of the two pieces laid out and split with the dotted line. Same for the top in the next box, this will leave the busier grain (to the right in the pic) for a later project maybe a box or something. I will also us the straight grain as accent pieces in the drawers, I need 6 but they are only a 1/4" thick so a can get two from each blank. So this is the plan and tomorrow I will get them cut out and glued up then take the glued up panels to final dimension this weekend. I hope to sneak out to the lumberyard for the addl maple I need tomorrow as well.
Popular Post pkinneb
First up today was to breakdown the lumber, used a jigsaw and bandsaw for this This should provide about 95% of the parts for the project And this stack can go back to the lumber rack for future projects After planing, jointing, and sanding the Wenge for the top and bottom I decided to head to the bench and hand plain the glue joint. You guys were definitely right about the splinters with this stuff I had a hard time, even with a shallow cut, getting a good edge at the jointer. I also got splinters on the planer which is why I ran it through the drum sander. You can see the gap off the jointer on the top in this pic its actually just a splinter off the top edge So a few passes with the hand plane and w're good All ready for glue up Both the top and the bottom panels glued up Next up I started working on my process for making some homemade veneer for the curved doors. First up resaw to about 1/8" at the BS (I cut the one end off so the piece would fit on the sled prior to taking this pic) Then I glued up a quick sled so I don't inadvertently sand into the conveyor belt since I am shooting for a 1/16" thick Then I started running the test piece through Really happy with the results. This will allow me to use the lumber from one board for all the outward facing pieces of this project. 1/16" just like I planned Disregard the rubber glove I was working on the CA glue finish on one of my chisel handles while working on this project. Since the BS was set up for resawing I rough cut the sides and back pieces and stacked the to rest for a couple days Next up take the top, bottom, sides, and back to final thickness and dimension and start on some joinery
Coop
The panels look awesome! That’s one heck of a feather board on your bs. That’s not THE green is it? If so, I’ll have to continue getting my wife to hold the board against the fence with chain mail gloves.

No not Festool they are called FeatherPro and you can get single or double I have both but really like this one for resawing.
Chestnut
@pkinneb Do you recommend those feather boards? If yes what brand are they? I'm looking for something for my bandsaw. I got sick of getting my fingers so close to it and have had some poor cuts as a result.
wdwerker
I've got a more conventional double stacked featherboard and I'm considering getting a set of those too !

Drew I don't use feather boards as often as I should but I use this Feather Duo from Bow Products double one every time I resaw, it works really well. I bought it from Peachtree Woodworking supply on one of their sales. I have a single at the TS but like I said I don't use it as much as I probably should.

Thanks! Will do not much shop time over the weekend had family stuff going on. It will be done by her birthday (I think) which is April 23rd I also took a few days off from the project to let the maple panels acclimatize but after changing my planer knives I was able to get the top, bottom and sides milled to size and the back panel glued up. Keep in mind this is a combination of Marc's WW build and a Woodsmith project so some parts may seem strange like the size of the back. I will not have a secret drawer in the back and the side panels will be curved and hinged off the back panel.
