I'm embarking on a coffee table design an wanted to do a lower "shelf" that had holes in it like that. Is there a name for that? Megan shot down my design so plain stretcher it is.

I don't know if there is a name for that.  I included those blocks, for two reasons.  #1 it would keep all three stretchers on the same plane. #2 every piece of this cherry had a twist in it somewhere, and this keeps them sorta straight.

In the Arts & Craft world where they have a lot of features like that.  There are two technical terms that I have seem mentioned in design articles, especially stuff done by Charles Limbert,  Cutouts and Grid Work. ;)
