Popular Post Janello
I wasn't going to do one...but since this project has been so damn fun, I just had to share. As of this post I have 8 days into this project working weekends and nights. Rear slab, milled and ready to be trimed to length. Front Slab. Dog Strip flushed up, and tails cut....Oh what a feeling! Front slab done, I'll trim to length and finish dogs when I get home tonight. I had a little chisel mishap on the end cap...slipped of the tails finessing the fit and took a small chunk off the cap...A few cuss words later I started a little repair with CA. Backing up a step, I was wiping the glue down with a wet rag and revealed some sexy colors!

SeventyFix
You're that far along and only 8 days in? Congratulations - you're doing fantastic. The bench looks great to say the least. I am really enjoying mine. It does get strange, though, when you're using this bench on future Wood Whisperer projects. Sometimes I'm watching the videos and working on a project and I have the same bench as Marc. We also have the same clamps and many of the same tools (not on purpose, just as it happened). So it's like I'm making the exact same project as he is with the same tools. Zero complaints about the bench, how it turned out and how useful it is. It's a tool that I use on every project in my garage shop.
estesbubba
Oh yeah it's looking good John! Even though it's a massive project it is really fun and you'll do some techniques with this that you might not ever do again. Now you have a working tail vise which will be very useful for the rest of the project. A friend of mine stopped by yesterday and said my bench is even more impressive in person than the pictures show. He asked if I would ever build another one and I said not anytime soon but I might down the road.

Really because there are plans, the guild videos and so many other journals that I watched prior, that I am on auto pilot. I think I built ten in my sleep before I started. Dknapp34
I'm impressed. I did mine nights and weekends as well. Took me 8...months.
Janello
Leg mortise's for rails done last night. As you can see, I followed the guild instructions to the "T" and routed one a little long, just like my hero Marc! Knock Knock...Who's there....Mortise.....Mortise who? Mortise bench be done!
Lee Bussy
Seeing all these definitely makes me want to make one. Unfortunately my shop is so filled with refinishing pieces that I can't move. Maybe next month! Looks great though, love the figure on the front and the contrasting dovetail. estesbubba
Looking good John! You don't realize how massive those legs are until you have to wrestle them around. Your "oh crap" looks like it will be hidden by the shoulder but I wasn't as lucky. I guess you can't choose when the bit is going to bite and take off. I've never done such deep mortises before and after the bit got away from me, I changed my approach. I did a repeated plunge half depth the whole length of the first pass-then cleaned up....Then plunged the whole length full depth- then cleaned up...That way was a bit slower but way less fatigue and much cleaner results! Find the cuss word in my shop and I will not send you a prize!
Chestnut
@Janello Is that a little saw blade holder that you keep on your table saw? That's a good idea. Bench is looking good and dang that's a lot of wood.

I keep a large and small combo-square in the block as well.

I wonder if the mortise layout in the plans are not a tad off.
