Popular Post treeslayer Posted October 21, 2017 Popular Post Report Share Posted October 21, 2017 This cabinet will hold 60 watches in 4 drawers, 15 to each drawer and a drawer for watch parts. as much as i like working with cherry, walnut ect. i wanted this one to be different so its mostly butternut with walnut accents and inlay. glued up four panels of butternut and one of walnut dovetailed the walnut on both ends four pins and four tails then cut them off 2 1/2 inches wide if you're an idiot and drop one they break really easy, glue and clamps to the rescue 1/2 inch deep X 5/16 wide tongue and then some 1/8 inch inlay on the top and both sides view of the top and both side pieces done, next will be a groove in the walnut dovetailed pieces that will fit on the butternut, hopefully the next part will start to make some sense for you guys as to where i'm going with this, thanks for looking and as usual comments and questions are most welcome. 13 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Watches never survived long in my world, digital or wind up. But a cabinet to hold a collection of useless antiquities sounds quite interesting ! Butternut isn't available much around here. But the little I've worked with was some nice stuff. its been a while since i've worked with it too Steve, its soft for a hardwood and tends to fuzz up when sanded, a little shellac and knock it down with some 320 does the trick, i just needed to work with something different this time. it is some pretty stuff and i see why they call it "white walnut". Good question Tom and i initially thought of that and switch to butternut where it passes thru the walnut, double stick tape the pieces to the bench and careful layout as to where the inlay passed thru the dovetails maybe, i think there is a way for sure but i always planned on using a round-over router bit on the dovetails on the top of the case and the inlay would have to be very deep for it to continue from the top to the sides of the case. i rounded over the dovetails on a walnut hope chest i made for my daughter and liked the effect so thats the plan for this project. Thanks Rick, i wanted this to be not like anything i have done in the past and build something a little out of my comfort zone, to be honest i go back and forth at this point as to whether i like it or not, it is different and thats what i was going for, i'll see how i feel tomorrow when i put some finish on it. Popular Post treeslayer Posted October 23, 2017 Author Popular Post Report Share Posted October 23, 2017 threw together a box joint jig for the drawers, and the result. not too bad for a piece of junk dado set. parts for the dividers, made with the same jig, and i'm pleased with the fit dry fit the pieces and got on a coat of shellac main case with two coats of ARS satin, i like the way the color came out, i'm starting to like this piece again. i'll glue the drawers and dividers together tomorrow and hopefully get some finish on them, thanks for looking guys. 6 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
