New saw, bad arbor...ugh

I purchased a new table saw, the Grizzly G0833P. It was delivered on Monday and I spent a couple hours each night this week getting it uncrated, moved down to the basement, assembled and set up. This saw comes pre-wired for 230v so I had to swap out a breaker and outlet which I did this morning. So now I'm all set to take her for a ride. I plugged it in and hit the switch to make sure the power was all good. Motor turned, blade spun (in the right direction), all good. Hit the stop button. As the blade comes to a stop I thought I saw a slight wobble. Nah can't be, brand new saw right? Start it up again, hit the stop button, same thing. Damnit. Definietly looks like a wobble. Maybe it's just the way the light refracts through the blade guard. I take that off and start and stop it again. Looks even worse! @#$&%#!! Take the blade off, check it for flat, it is. Clean off the arbor, plate & nut and check for burrs, all good. Put the blade back on, same thing. $#@@%!!!! Try 3 different blades all with same result. I measured the wobble at approx. 1/32"  at the teeth using a steel rule (don't have a dial indicator. yet). Son of a @#$%%!!

Called Grizzly, they took the info and am now waiting for a call back. They already said they could send me a new arbor. Which I guess is easier than crating it back up again and sending it back.

I've never replaced an arbor before. How difficult is it? Am I opening myself up to other potential issues if I go that route?

So now I won't be making sawdust this weekend like I planned on my new shiny toy. Severely disappointed.

Bummer. I have never done this so I can't help, but I would imagine it could be done in a couple hours....but this kind of stuff is what makes me afraid of buying from grizzly or another 'budget' manufacturer.  I prefer to buy used when I'm on a budget so I can see it run before I go to all the trouble of moving it around.

I have a g0690, so if don't know if your saw uses the same washer/nut to hold the blade.  I have to use 2 hands to make sure the washer and  nut are lined up correctly when I tighten nut.  If the washer is not lined up, the nut will tighten, everything looks OK the blade will spin and there is noticeable wobble when spinning down.  After 8 years this still gets me every now and then.  Might be something for you to check.

yeah this was one of my first guesses. The nut and washer are different than any I've seen before. The nut has a shoulder that fits into the center hole of the washer. I played with that for a bit and it seems to be seated properly.

Finally got the call back from Grizzly yesterday. My choices are:

1) They send a new arbor and I replace it myself as they do not have field techs. ( Umm no)

2) Crate it up ,send it back and they send me a new saw. (That will suck)

So I chose option 3, I crate it up, send it back and get my $$ back. They said they will have to "inspect it" to confirm that there is noticeable blade wobble as I said. If they confirm I get 100% refund, if they don't find anything wrong I get charged 10% re-stocking fee plus the shipping cost for the return. So I think I'll be buying a dial indicator this weekend to take more precise measurements on how far out it is and take pictures of all the readings. I have feeling it may turn into "we can't find anything wrong with it so...."

The silver lining in all of this, my wife knows how frustrated and disappointed I've been so she said "just spend the extra money and buy a better saw"...... Now where did I put that Saw Stop catalog..........

They should send you something else along with the new arbor-like an 8"  jointer, drill press, or  something you need to make it worth the trouble.

I guess part of the reason the price is cheap is that they don't check anything before crating the tools up.

I'm down to two old Grizzly tools that work okay.   I won't be buying any more.

Grizzly is an interesting thing.  People have a whole shop of their stuff and no complaints.   Other people have problems and others get problems fresh out of the crate.  It seems like a little more QC would really help them.

I have mentioned this before, I have a Grizzly jointer that I purchased in the late 80's.  It served me well but I am getting ready to replace the new one will have different badging though.

That's not great customer service. It's not like you are shipping a book or sweater, this is a ridiculous item to have to move.

Grizzly should be tripping over themselves to make this right. Give them the gears - call and complain loudly and to everyone in the chain of command.

+1

It's a Grizzly problem that they've made into your problem.  If they don't make it right I would warn them that you'll be going onto several forums to tell them of your experience.  You shouldn't have to suffer because they can't get their QC in order, or trying to save money at your expense.  Them trying to save a little on shipping..  it will cost them a lot more if they loose customers.

Watch for the potential in succumbing to commercialism in all its forms.  It's sole purpose being to trick you.  Coupons, sales, gimmicks, etc., all tricks to do nothing but deceive you in one way or another.

When I do my shopping I plan ahead of time and prepare for the worst.  I can eliminate companies this way and I can plan on how I can get back at them if there's a problem.  It's unfortunate but that's where we are with capitalism right now.

They don't care.

Grizzly, like Powermatic, Jet and others, have machines that hit the sweet spot, some that are average and some that should be avoided.  The G0833 is not a familiar machine to me and may just be one of Grizzly's stinkers like Powermatic's drill press or Jet's Jointer/planer combo machines.

The Grizzly machines I have were chosen after reading the testimony of many, many owners of the model.  My research on the forums has paid off and I have been very lucky with my green machines (I have other colors too).  You want to have a barrel of laughs, try taking a PM2800 back apart to return it . . . actually there were no real laughs involved. :).

I have certainly seen Grizzly bend over backwards to help customers on other forums.  Now and then I have also seen them draw a line and be unexpectedly harsh.  I do not know what the difference is for this small percentage but, there have been more than one 'return for refund' threads out there.

I think when shopping the home-shop brands a lot of research and owner experiences should be your guide.  Don't let one experience trash an entire brand for you; the world just doesn't work that way anymore . . .brand consistency I mean.  Even after my Powermatic experience I would still buy one of their tools that folks have had good luck with without reservation.  I hope this comes to an acceptable conclusion for you.

I bought some Grizzly metal working tools years ago.  The milling machine was a gem, the lathe was an absolute turd.  I feel your pain of the customer service, or lack there-of.

Echoing many others, they do offer some great machines at very good prices.  Based on my experience, I'll pass on machinery from them at this point.

Basically, long way of saying enjoy your new Sawstop.  They really are THAT nice...

I agree. They should be kissing your butt and buying you breakfast. That sucks! Good luck dude.

I'm sending it back. It's just a matter of whether they agree that something is wrong with it. I had a chance to put a dial indicator on it last night. I measured it .008" out just bellow the tooth gullets on a 10" blade. I tried 3 blades with the same result. I was actually expecting it to be more as you can see the wobble as the blade slows down.

I took pictures and videos of my measurements. I need to see if there is someone I can send them to.
