Popular Post gee-dub
Making up some new bar clamp extenders. My first versions were OK but a little short and did not offer very good wiggle resistance. This made it a bit of a pain to get the clamp heads aligned while tightening. The thin caps are glued and pinned on. They will be cut to length later. I have to do a lot of dominoes over the course of the new bedroom set. I tried a Rockler glue tip that spreads glue on all four surfaces of the mortise. It works well if anyone has been looking at them. I am a fan of things that make my shop time easier, more accurate, etc. Some doohickeys are more effort than benefit. The glue tip has to be cleaned after use but comes with an air tight cover and a cleaning tool. I used it for a couple of days and then cleaned it and it wasn't much trouble. I wouldn't use it for a few but for a dozen it is worth the effort.

I feel like the smarter snow removal businesses charge some sort of rate regardless of if they remove snow or not. Like $xx monthly and than $YYY per snow removal where $YYY is lower than if they didn't charge a monthly service fee. I'm not sure though haven't dug into their service models.
Tom King
Every body I've pulled out of a ditch here was from up North somewhere. They always say that people down here don't know how to drive in the snow. The trouble here is that there is almost always a layer of ice on the road under the ice. Snow won't stick if the ground isn't frozen and first participation is usually rain which freezes on the ground. Snow is not hard to drive on. Ice can be challenging. People down here know to wait when it's like that. We don't usually have to wait but a day or so.

When I plowed for my FIL, many many years ago, he billed about 40% at flat rate and the remainder at actual. Down winters he made enough to keep the lights on but in heavy winters he didn't get caught short it was aa real balancing act. Not sure what they do now days. legenddc
As predicted, schools are closed for today. They announced that yesterday by 6 PM. So far this morning we have 3" of snow. My parent's had 2-2.5" roughly 15 miles away from us.

We are handicapped as we generally have no weather. People around here react to rain by either driving the way they always do or driving stupid-slow because they don't know why water is falling out of the sky. The ones who drive like they always do often run right into the ones who drive too slow. *** NOTE *** I'm a native. JohnG
When I lived in SoCal, my 17 mile commute would take about 1.5-2hours if there was any rain due to all of the accidents. There would be a minimum of 1 car upside down along my route, with many fender benders as well. I’d always laugh when the radio traffic report would just say, “Too many to list.” Glad to be out of there.
JohnG
I made sure my SawStop is working properly. Forgot I had moved my miter gauge and ran it straight into the blade. It only just got through the anodizing. Took me a minute to figure out what had happened!
Mark J
Yup, it worked. Just gotta chalk that up as an expensive lesson. For what it's worth, the teacher and I triggered the highschool's SS cutting some reclaimed lumber we already knew had nails in it.
JohnG
I don’t really care about the loss of it. I had a spare cartridge on hand I’ve been looking for an excuse to replace that blade. It was a good reminder about habits and assumptions. While my hands/arms were at a safe distance the whole time, a similar set of events could have led to an injury. I’m making a small sled for kumiko, and had moved my miter gauge to the right slot to get an idea of sled size and position. I did a few other things, and then came back to the TS to crosscut the piece for the miter bars, saw my miter fence that I always use and that always clears the blade, slapped the piece down and ran the middle of my miter gauge straight into the blade. Had the SS not triggered, I would have a slot cut through my miter gauge.
legenddc
I can see myself doing that when taking the Incra miter gauge off of the Incra miter express. For those not familiar the miter express shifts the miter slot over to the left some. Yesterday we had a record high of 71* in DC. I of course had picked that day to have the oven on the entire day making a pork shoulder for tacos. Dinner was delicious though! I took advantage of the warm weather and cleaned out my car interior for an hour and also installed some new weatherstripping on part of our front door. A few screws were loose in the door and storm door that got tightened.
Popular Post Von
On the fringe of what one might call woodworking, I got this for my niece at her request... Spent some time over the weekend with her putting it together. This is my first experience with flat-pack laser cut wood (along with a fair number of small metal and plastic parts). Some of these pieces are small enough to be fragile and I had to repair one, but overall I'm impressed with the precision and what one can do - this project is going to me more complex than any of my tools and I can't imagine the CAD drawing that exists somewhere for this thing.

gee-dub
Took another stab at the small bandsaw DC. It is still not quite there . . . I cobble some plywood scrap and some magnets to make a shroud to replace the current focused nozzle. It will surround the lower guides. I was still getting spoil out of the upper compartment at the spine. I wye'd in the factory lower collection port. It seems better. Time will tell. Maybe the vac just isn't moving enough air for the BS(?).

Crazy!! I just got mine too, but it was over 200% of last year's! The actual gas usage was just a bit under last Dec's, so it's the cost of gas that went up so bad (and I thought I'd just read the US is now the leading producer of nat'l gas?) Last July I had to replace both my furnace and A/C, 26 years old, and I got the most efficient heat pump/furnace combo I could. It was sweet when I saw my August A/C bill was <$40, but the reduction of my heating (gas, not electric) was much less impressive. I ran the numbers and my new HVAC system will have paid for itself just before my 137th birthday, so there's that. 1

Reminds me of the salesman who was trying to upsell my parents on a 50 year roof warranty instead of the 40 year one. He was shocked when my mom told him she's not going to live at that house until 120 so she didn't need the 50 year roof.

Popular Post Tom King
on topic of what did I do today: Finished the water line maze in that shower this morning. After lunch I used the mower to shred all the manure in the pastures that hasn't been done all Winter which is better for the grass this Spring. While I was out there, I saw that the distribution box for the septic tank was flooding effluent out of the top, so I fixed that which barely left me time to get cleaned up for Dinner. Tonight, played with puppies in the house while we watched the last two episodes of Transatlantic. Between episodes I went out to the pasture, gave the horses some hay, and put their blankets on because it's going to get cold again tonight. I sat down to type this before getting ready to put the dogs to bed, which for my part means taking the boys out in their yard, cleaning up that yard for the day, and getting them in their crates in the dog room for the night. After they're all in bed, I mop the floors in the dog room, puppy room, and the puppy play area in the puppy room. All the puppy bedding for the day, that Pam changes while I mop the floors, goes in the washer, and we're done working for another day. Nothing unusual. Just another day in the life.
