My Grandmother sold a stand of Long Leaf Pine and bought all her grandchildren a car. We were given a budget of 3,000 and told to go order what we wanted from Herman Sadler, the Grandfather of Hermie and Elliot of NASCAR racing. I added something like 350 to the 3,000 to get the 442. It was pretty well shot when I traded it on a 1977 Dodge van with slant six and three on the tree for a work truck and to sleep in. Drum brakes all around made brake fade a scary thing more than a few times. -
I speced mine as well and it was a high school graduation gift from my parents. I wanted a 289 but no a/c as I figured it would give me more power. Luckily my girlfriends were tolerant in the summer months. -
I worked at a marina on the lake here when I was a teenager. People complained about the price being high because the place sold gas to boats for 29.9. It was cheaper on the road, but the marina marked it up ten cents a gallon. I had one of these except mine was Twilight blue (darker metallic than this one) with a white vinyl top and white interior because I was planning on living in South Florida for a couple of years going to school. I sold it after I started building houses because gas went to a dollar a gallon and it wouldn't carry many tools. Mine may have been the only one ever built with a vinyl top, but I ordered it like I wanted it and thought the dark metal top would be too hot down there.

I remember going to Sears, years ago and buying a battery for my ‘68 Mustang for $38.00 and gas was only $0.32 a gallon. Ain’t so no mo!
